Our Young Social Innovators (YSI) class are busy working on this year’s exciting project which focuses on the potential danger posed to pedestrians by the low levels of noise emitted from hybrid and electric cars.
The class has completed a number of surveys and the results have been extremely useful and quite shocking in certain cases.
Yesterday, our class completed some active research on this issue. We had Ms. Murphy drive her diesel car and Melissa drove her hybrid car and we completed some field tests to see just how far away young people could hear the cars approach. Students had their eyes closed and their backs to the approaching vehicle. We measured the distances and then made note of the various points where students were aware of the approaching vehicle.
We were delighted to be joined by students and teachers from Carnew National School who also took part in the experiment. We also had some students from 1st year take part in order to test if there was a difference between what smaller young people could hear when compared to the older students.
The class will now take the time to analyse the results and we look forward to sharing them shortly.
Many thanks to Fr. Casey for the use of the church car park and to Melissa for taking part. We would also like to thank the students and teachers from Carnew National School for their enthusiastic participation.
Our Christmas newsletter has finally been published. It captures the many and varied activities that took place during term one. Congratulations to everyone. There have been so many positives, all of which are captured in our newsletter.

What a busy week for our twenty-nine 3rd year students and their teachers in France!
Tuesday was full of variety. Students had the opportunity to try their hand at "Les Boules de Fort" which is a regional type of boules that dates back to the 17th century. It is played indoors on a resin, convex floor. Certainly a first for us all!
A visit to the beautiful town of Angers was next. We had lunch together, did some shopping and later at the outlet store, l'Atoll, there was time for some more shopping.
Wednesday began with the group working on their "journal intime". They then went to class with their French students. During the afternoon they spent time with theit families or they played the French vs Irish football game!! Apparently, the Irish flag was flying high after the game!
Thursday has been another great day with the sun shining for the visit to Mount Saint Michel and later to St. Malo, the renowned seaside town in Britany. Students returned home to Chateau Gontier, tired but in great form where they will spend the evening with their host families.
Our Under 19s Ladies will face t St Louis' of Rathmines, Dublin, after defeating St Columba’s College on a score line of 31 to 21.
On Wednesday, our under 19s hosted St Columba’s College in the All Ireland last sixteen. This is the first time the school has ventured this far into the competition after promotion last year to division C. Carnew took an early lead which we maintained for the duration of the game. In the final two quarters, St. Columba's did all they could to try stop our offence but the Carnew ladies met each challenge head-on.
Overall it was an excellent game played by two well matched teams.
We now face St Louis' of Rathmines in the All Ireland quarter final on Monday the 22nd January in the National Basketball Arena. More details to follow.
