UCC Entrance Scholarships 2023

We are delighted to announce that 9 Students from the LC Class of 2023 have been awarded Entrance Scholarships to UCC.  Congratulations to Andrew O'Sullivan, Jonathan O'Shaughnessy, Robert Ahern, Oscar Andrews, Harry Jones, Charlie Cullinane, Jack O'Regan, Michael Hoare and Ross Kenny on their fantastic achievement. The Scholarships will be presented at a special ceremony in UCC on 27 November. 

BT Young Scientist 2024

Congratulations to our students whose projects have been selected for this year's BT Young Scientists Exhibition. CBC will be presented by two Second Year individual projects(  Max Power and Nikhil Sudaram ) and two Fourth Year group projects( Matthew Herbert, Odhran O'Sullivan and Guan Hi Lin, Henry Ireland,Luke MacMullen. Many thanks to Ms Vicki Hennessy and Ms Michelle O'Brien for their work with students preparing their entries for this year's competition.

National Swimming Finals

Congratulations to Phelim Hanley, 3rd Year, who has enjoyed great success at the Irish National Age Group Championships. Phelim took a total of 6 Gold and one Silver medals in Freestyle, Butterfly and Individual Medley. He has also been selected to the Irish National Performance Pathway Programme which takes place in Dublin during mid term break. 

Wellbeing Week: Visit from Tomás O'Leary & Robbie O'Flynn

Former past pupil and current staff member Tomás O'Leary has a strong sporting connection. As a talented GAA player, Tomás won Minor and All-Ireland hurling titles with Cork in 2000 and 2001.As a professional rugby player, Tomás played with Munster, where he was part of the team that won the Heineken Cup in 2006 and again in 2008. He also played in the English Premiership with London Irish, and the Top 14 with Montpellier. Internationally, he represented Ireland, where he was a member of the team that won the 2009 Six Nations Championship and Grand Slam. Also in 2009, he was selected for the Lions, though injury prevented him from touring with the squad. O'Leary retired from professional rugby in July 2017.

During his time in CBC,Robbie played hurling in every grade, up to and including Harty Cup. As a student in UCC, he won 2 prestigious Fitzbibbon Cup Medals.Robbie has played in every grade from underage to Senior with his club Erin’s Own, where he won a County Under 21 Championship in 2016. Robbie has proudly represented Cork at Minor, Under 21 (winning a Munster Medal in 2018 and nominated for the Team of the Year) and Senior (winning 2 consecutive Munster Medals in 2017 and 2018).Tomás and Robbie spoke to 5th Year students about the importance of fostering connections, particularly in the face of adversity.

 

Wellbeing Week: Visit from Senator Jerry Buttimer

Jerry Buttimer is a Senator in the 26th Seanad. In December 2022 he was appointed as the Cathaoirleach of Seanad Éireann. Jerry was previously elected to Dáil Éireann in February 2011, representing the constituency of Cork South Central. Prior to his election to Dáil Éireann, Jerry served as a Senator, having been elected in July 2007, and was a member of Cork City Council from 2004 to 2007. Senator Buttimer is also the founder of Fine Gael LGBT and Party Spokesperson on Transport.Under Senator Buttimer’s stewardship, the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Health and Children held a series of meetings examining the misuse of alcohol and other drugs. This process culminated in the publication of a report which detailed a series of recommendations for tackling these complex issues. He has also led the Committee’s consultation process on the Children First Bill, which puts in place a statutory framework to protect children and combat child abuse and neglect.Jerry spoke to 4th Year students about the importance of creating and maintaining positive connections.

John Lonergan is from Bansha, Co Tipperary. He joined the Irish Prison Service when he was 20 years old and began working in Limerick Prison. He was appointed Governor of Mountjoy Prison in June 1984 and, apart from a four-year stint as governor of Portlaoise Prison, he spent the rest of his career at the Dublin inner-city prison.John is passionate about hurling and has had a long association with Kilmacud Crokes GAA club. He spoke to 6th Year students on issues such as Social Justice, Wellbeing and Mental Health.

CBC was delighted to welcome Alan Dineen to speak with 2nd Year students. Alan is a renowned strength and conditioning coach with a Masters in Performance Coaching based in cork. He has coached at the highest levels, preparing teams for Wheelchair European championships and the World Championships in Wheelchair Rugby, he was also involved with the Tipperary All-Ireland winning team in 2019 running Strength &Conditioning sessions for the Cork-based players . Alan himself is an international wheelchair rugby player who has also competed at numerous European Championships and World Championships. Alan spoke about his own journey to date, current topics of interest to him, the importance of breaking down barriers, playing with Ireland and more. 

Wellbeing Week : Visit from Conor O'Keeffe

Former pupil, Conor O’Keeffe, returned to CBC today to speak with Third Year students.Conor shared his own experiences with life’s challenges and emphasised the need for all to develop resilience and how to do so, in a practical way.In 2020 Conor raised in excess of 67,500 Euro for Pieta House, by running 32 marathons across 32 counties in 32 days. He started  this feat while wearing a 32-pound vest to symbolise negative thoughts. He would shed a pound a day from the vest as he progressed.Conor is the founder of  CrúMan, an outdoor adventure community that embodies the  principles of looking after one’s mental and physical health, while exploring the outdoors.

Former pupil, Shane Lehane, returned to CBC today to speak with 3 rd Year students about the importance of developing strong connections and utilising our time wisely. Shane Lehane is a lecturer in the Department of Folklore and Ethnology, UCC where his chief interest is in custom, tradition, and belief. He has additional research interests in material culture, folklife, vernacular traditions and food and as a PhD candidate his thesisdeals with the nature of material culture and time.Shane is also Course Director of Cultural and Heritage Studies in CSN, College of FurtherEducation, Cork. He has lectured in archaeology, folklore, history, and the arts for over 30years and has developed a programme of studies that facilitates both young and maturestudents to progress to Arts and Humanities programmes at 3rd level.Shane is also a beekeeper and advocate of Irish vernacular craft.

Fr Philip Mulryne OP is a Dominican friar of the Irish Provence. He has been a priest for six years and joined the Dominican Order in 2012. Prior to his religious vocation he was a professional footballer with Manchester United,Norwich City and Cardiff City.Fr. Philip represented Northern Ireland 27 times and whilst understanding the great privilege of playing football as a profession, explored with Fifth Year students the question of true human happiness.
