Science Week

This week was National Science week. As part of the participation in Regina Mundi, a number of lunchtime and in class activities were held. 1st year student took part in “I’m a scientist, get me out of here” all week where they could ask a scientist questions about their work. Monday saw a crystal growing workshop facilitated by 4th year students and the launch of the “Science at Home” photo competition. Tuesday was the Science magic show brought to us by the 5th year Chemistry students. Flame tests gave us yellow, red and green flames while a dust explosion and a screaming jellybaby had everyone shrieking. On Thursday, two teams took part in the ISTA Senior Science Quiz in UCC. The participants were Eilíse Ireland, Precious Wilson, Aine Ginty, Niamh Lyons, Ciara Murphy and Eve Kelly. Friday we were joined by the SFI STEM Communicator of the Year Dr. John O’Donoghue from the Royal Society of Chemistry. He brought his Colour Chemistry workshop to the lab at lunchtime. This was also the final of the “Science at Home” photo competition. The winner was 6th year student Laura Harrington with her photo of science in a teacup. Finally, the 3rd year students reminded us of the importance of vaccines as they presented their posters of “Remembering the 1918 Flu Pandemic”. The winners of the best poster were Yzabella Carney, Anna Sheehan, Meg Quinn, Saoirse O’Shea and Laoise Greally. The Science Department
