Saturday June 1st saw athletes from all over the island of Ireland compete in Tullamore. Bandon Grammar had a total of 9 students competing in this highly competitive environment.
Mergen McLaughlin of Form 2 shook off the nerves and threw the 4kg shot 10 meters, 15 inches to finish 7th best in the country.
Sophie Marry ,also of Form 2, competed in the Triple Jump. Sophie put in a spirited performance to jump 8 meters 46 inches. This places Sophie in the top 10 Junior long jumpers in Ireland.
Kasimir Von Klitzing of Form 4 known for his engine on the hockey field tackled the grueling 1,500m steeple chase. He stuck with the main group right up until the final lap when tactics and experience came into play. Finishing in a time of 5 minutes and 4 seconds. We would like to wish Kasimir all the best as he leave Bandon Grammar.
Lauren McCourt suffered most of this season with injury and qualifying for the All Ireland's was a massive achievement for Lauren. She competed in the Inter Girls 200 meters against a very strong field. Lauren had a difficult start but powered through the last 50 meters to finish 3rd in a time of 25.16.
Stacey Komolafe competed in the inter girls 300m. The windy conditions required a lot of effort for tired legs coming down the home straight and Stacey was just beaten on the line finishing in 4th place.
Aisling Cassidy of Form 6 had some wonderful performances in the Triple Jump and Long Jump. A very early start for the Long Jump resulted in some contestants not achieving a legal jump. The nerves settled and Aisling stormed down the track to jump a very impressive 5 meters 52 inches finishing 3rd. In the Triple Jump Aisling achieved 1st place with a dominant display of 11 meters 41 inches.
Laura Nicholson participated in the Senior Girls 3000m. After battling a chest infection all week Laura bravely stood on the start line. She stuck with the leading group for the first three laps but the fast pace was too much and unfortunately Laura had to drop out. This ,thankfully, wont be the last we see of Laura on the athletics track and we wish her all the best in America.
A special mention goes to the the Inter Girls relay team of Lauren McCourt, Stacey Komolafe, Madison Daly and Ciara Lynch. Their persistence and dedication resulted in a photo finish for the 4X100m relay. The final result gave the Bandon Grammar girls 2nd place with a time of 50.50 and the winners with a time of 50.47.
