Dear Parent(s)/Guardians(s)
As advised at the Transition Year Information Meeting, this year’s Transition Year students will be visiting Carlingford Adventure Centre in County Louth from Wednesday 30th March to Friday 1st April 2021 inclusive.
This trip is a highly enjoyable one. Students take part in a wide variety of outdoor activities that focus on promoting communication, leadership and team building skills. It is a wonderful opportunity for the girls to get to know each other and to forge bonds with other students before they progress into Senior Cycle. The trip plays a key role in reaffirming the positive tone set during this year of personal challenge, adventure and social development.
The cost of the trip is €230, which includes meals, accommodation, all activities and transport costs from and back to the school. Activities include rock-climbing, abseiling, kayaking, hill-walking, canoeing, laser tag and zip-lining. Students do a morning and afternoon activity each day in the outdoors, in addition to a team building event each evening.
As it is necessary for us to secure our booking with Carlingford Adventure Centre, I would be grateful if you could arrange to pay the deposit of €100 by Wednesday, 1st December 2021. This can be done through Easy Payments Plus on our school website at www.olschool.ie. Alternatively, cheques may be made payable to Our Lady’s School and handed in to Reception in an envelope with your daughter’s name, class and ‘Carlingford’ written on the front.
Should you have any queries regarding the trip, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
Yours faithfully,
Lyndsey Phelan,
Transition Year Co-ordinator.

TY Update & What’s On Next Week

This week kicked off with three groups of students participating in Sign Language classes. All students thoroughly enjoyed their virtual lessons. It was fantastic to see them signing to one another and teaching their OLS teacher’s how to sign their names.
Wednesday afternoon saw a number of our TY students participate in an Introductory Barista Course led by Dublin Barista School. This workshop equipped students with a new skill to help secure part-time or summer employment. The course delved into the world of coffee farming, coffee roasting, coffee brewing and the coffee industry in Ireland. Each student then had the opportunity to make their own coffee, topping it off with a love heart design. Should students wish, there are now places available for the advanced qualified barista training.
TY Interviews took place this week. We received fantastic feedback from teachers on how well students presented themselves. They thoroughly enjoyed listening to students discuss their TY Experience to date. Well done and thank you to all involved!
DOJOMOR 2021 took place last weekend and we had some TY students participate in a number of different coding workshops. We also had students take part in Down Syndrome Dublin’s Information evening, preparing them for their film workshop at the end of November, where they will be supporting adults with Downs Syndrome.
Throughout the week TY’s also had the opportunity to sign up to Microsoft Ireland’s Project Management Workshop and AIB’s Career skills Competition.
All TY students completed their My Eirquest and My Aptitude Tests this week. These assessments are used to assist students in recognising their strengths and so aid them in making their subject choice for the Leaving Certificate.
Next week will see another rotation for TY’s where they will get to try their hand at new and exciting modules. Starting Monday, each TY class will be allocated a POD of trees around the school. They will plant bulbs around these trees and watch them bloom in Spring just as they are doing throughout their TY Experience. These trees will be a symbol of their growth as a class and we hope to decorate these trees during the Christmas festive period.
We also look forward to the Great TY Bake Off for all taking place next Wednesday, judged by our very own Ms. Ronan. Thursday will see our TY’s participate in ‘Run in the Dark’ for the Mark Pollock Trust. Round 3 of our TY Table Tennis tournament will start Monday.
Lastly, we look forward to engaging in the 66th Cork International Film Festival. We are delighted to have our TY’s participate in ‘Intinn’, the Festival’s successful Film and Mental Health programme for Transition Year students.
Make sure and stay tuned for some exciting news coming your way next week!
