Reading Week Wrap Up

What a privilege to have Sheena Wilkinson in school today, serendipitously on the same day when many of our 6th Year students will vote for their very first time in our National Presidential Election. Sheena is the author of ‘Star by Star’, a novel set in the north of Ireland in 1918 when World War came to an end and women finally won their right to vote. Stella is a somewhat unlikely heroine, whose determination, courage and never-give-up attitude sees her face many personal challenges, including the death of her mother. Stella is a timely reminder that despite all the problems we face in life, when we women persevere and stay true to our convictions, change can happen and we can make a difference in the world. As well as reading the book over the course of the week, every student wrote about a woman they admire. Written responses were passionate, personal and original. Offerings ranged from mothers to celebrities like Emma Watson, Oprah Winfrey, to fictional characters like Katniss from ‘The Hunger Games’ and Elizabeth Bennet from ‘Pride and Prejudice’. Staff also got involved, provoking a bit of a stir amongst the student body in the GPA. Shortlisted pieces are on display currently, and if you haven’t read them, you will now. Thanks to Sheena for coming in and answering our questions about Stella, Sandy and Rose, and for talking about editing and re-drafting, something our 3rd Year English students know all about as we race to the finish line of our CBAs after mid-term. In the words of Stella, “I smiled at the heap of thorny branches in my wheel-borrow. “Well, I’m a modern girl”.’
