Bronze Medal in Chemistry Olympiad for William Rasim Hartley

William Rasim Hartley (6th year) gives an account of his journey to win bronze at this year's Chemistry Olympiad.
I took part in the Chemistry Olympiad this year upon recommendation from my chemistry teacher Mr O’Regan and sat the first round as a multiple choice quiz at home. The questions were challenging but enjoyable as they pushed me a little further than the scope of the Leaving Cert Course. I was invited to then participate in the national final of the Chemistry Olympiad a few weeks later. Mr O’Regan helped me a lot with the preparation for this as he gave me material to study that would aid in tackling the tougher level of questions on these exams. I enjoyed this as it allowed me to get a taste of some more difficult chemistry that still had relevance to the Leaving Cert. I completed this exam and was awarded the Bronze Medal amongst all student in the Republic of Ireland and North of Ireland.
As a result of this I was invited to extra training with professors from various universities in Ireland and the UK. This consisted of 11 2 hour lectures over the Easter holidays and these were the most rewarding as it gave allowed me to gain an understanding of what it is like to study chemistry at third-level education. After the training we had to take part in a selection exam for the team of 4 that would represent Ireland on the international stage in July at the 54th International Chemistry Olympiad. Unfortunately I didn’t make the team but it was still a thoroughly enjoyable experience as it allowed me to broaden my horizons beyond secondary level education and learn a lot along the way with several very interesting topics being covered my favourite being electrophilic aromatic substitution.

2020, a year we will not forget!! PBC Seniors, confident of victory, were ready to play local rivals CBC in the Senior Cup Final, but unfortunately, like everything else that year, it was postponed . . and postponed . . and ultimately never happened. Last week our 2020 Senior players returned to PBC to meet their coaches, to enjoy a few refreshments and to finally receive their Senior Cup Medals - they and CBC shared the honours. All the team were in attendance at the Prize Giving, (though some running from exams and others running to exams!!) Pictured also below are brothers John and Bevan Forde, both in the 2020 Senior Squad, a rare enough occurrence! Well done to all the 2020 Senior Cup Rugby Team, their Captain Alex Kendellen and their coaches Mr. Ger Burke, Mr. Don Buckley, Mr. Ian Lehane, Mr. Cian Bohane and absent from photo, Mr. Enda O' Regan.

The recently formed Music Society of PBC played to two packed audiences in the Dan Donovan Theatre earlier this afternoon.
A diverse ensemble provided an expansive range of genres, ranging from the cool, demure tones of the La La Land Suite to an exhibition of drumming from Daniel Maume that enthralled the audience.
Pianists Adam Hartley, Louis Flynn and Rory Buckley performed beautiful classical and contemporary works. Their seductive and brilliant musicianship was a joyous experience.
Liam Ring, Liam Keville, Michael Dan Lucey and Robert Charteris showcased their talents with both individual and collaborative arrangements. Johnny McCarthy provided vibrant rhythm on the drum box.
Mattie O Flynn performed two dazzling solo pieces.
The showcase extended to the reading of poems by Emmet Brady who read a decadent lyric from the Jazz Age and Hugh McCarthy who read a poem entitled Freedom, written in his English class by the pianist Louis Flynn.
Special mention also to Olan O’Donovan, Miguel Fleming and Conor Power for their work with sound and lighting.
We can look forward to more exciting work from our talented students early next year.
