Two second year students from St Declan’s are just back from representing Ireland at the European Taekwon-Do Championships in Liverpool. The two boys, Finn Howard (2 Hamilton) and Max Cleary (2 Osbourne), were part of an Irish squad of 17 male and female competitors who competed over 4 days at the Echo Arena in Liverpool. Although they were both unsuccessful this time, the squad as a whole took home a silver and four bronze medals. 'Both Finn and Max competed to the highest level of their ability and left nothing on the mat’ said their instructor Master Howard. ‘The standard was extremely high and they learned a lot. It was a great experience for them to compete at that level and I have no doubt that the boys will continue to improve.’
There were 800 competitors from 32 countries with the Russian, Ukrainian and Czechs dominating the competition. The two boys are already planning for the 2018 Euros in Estonia but first they must prepare for their summer exams.

Dublin Colleges U14 Hurling final - a Grueling Battle

Yesterday afternoon on a windswept Abbotstown pitch the Dublin 'A' colleges juvenile title was battled for. St Declan's College was pitted against St Colmcilles, Knocklyon. It was a game worthy of a final as it produced massive displays of skill and courage from both sides.
Playing against a strong breeze in the first half St Declan's defence held tight and defended with great guile. Time and time they drove forward under sustained pressure coming out on top of their individual duels. In particular, Jack O'Shea produced a master class in hurling and was the outsatnding player on the pitch. In a low scoring game St Colmcilles managed only one point from play and a further four from frees. At the other end scores proved elusive with St Declan's managing just two points. St Declan's were presented with a golden goal scoring opportunity which agonisingly fell to the keepers hand.
The second half provided a gigantic tusle between both sides. Each ball was eagerly contested for with no player willing to yield. And so the title's winning came down to the last few pucks of the game. St Declan's won a free thirty yards out when Ger Ryan was dragged down. Needing three points to win and with a minute left on the clock he had to take his chance on scoring a goal. Against a goal mouth crowded with players however it wasn't to be. The final whistle sounded the end of a truly great display of hurling and a victory for St Colmcilles who claimed their first ever Dublin 'A' Juvenile title.
It has been a great journey for the St Declan's players over the past few months filled with memorable displays. Their development from the ranks of B hurling last year is a testament to their enthusiasm and passion coupled with the great coaching work that is being done at club level. We would like to take the opportunity to thank each of the players for their contribution and to their clubs for all the help and co-operation received.
This year the players have been drawn from St Oliver Plunkett's Eoghan Ruadh, Naomh Fionnbarra, Na Fianna and Erin's Isle.

In little less than one month's time a group of eleven students and three teachers from St Declan's College will be departing for Zambia on the Edmund Rice Development Immersion project. The project was initially planned for Chifwani training centre in Kasama to work with Br Dominic Sykes. However, the Brothers are in the process of handing over the running of this centre to the Archdiocese of Kasama and Br Sykes is being appointed to a new mission.
Our group will now be carrying out their immersion in Mazabuka, located about two hours from the capital city, Lusaka. Br. Jackson Mubela is the local co-ordinator contact there.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of those people directly involved with the immersion - students, parents and teachers - for the huge amount of work which has been carried out over the last few months preparing and fundraising for the project. We are deeply indebted to our students and parents, the members of the local community and those people further afield who have so generously supported our fundraising drives. Without your generosity we would not be in a position to engage in this very worthy project. It promises to be life changing for all who will travel.

On Wednesday 29th March, 36 students across first to third year took part in Mount Sackville's Fun Muck Run in the Phoenix Park. The runners were very successful with a St Declan's team winning the 3k junior race and other teams coming in fourth and sixth place. More importantly, it was a day of activity and fun. All students had great fun; climbing hay bales, scaling steep slopes and getting spayed by water guns courtesy of the girls from Mount Sackville. Well done to all students who took part on the day.
