Dear Parents/Guardians/Students, I hope this message finds you all safe and well. The Easter break was very welcome I'm sure and provided an opportunity to come away from the screens a little and recharge and refresh ahead of this term. Today marks the beginning of that term and no doubt the students are re-engaging with their teachers this morning. I want to thank the many parents who took the time to fill out the survey on distance learning. This survey has provided us with really useful information about the reality of how you are finding this experience. There are serious and genuine challenges being experienced but overall families are coping magnificently given the circumstances we all find ourselves in. Things are far from perfect but together we can overcome many of these challenges. To our 6th years, thank you to those of you who filled in the survey specifically for you. Again, your feedback is vital in helping your teachers to effectively help you through this time. I'm sure you still have many questions around the arrangements for your exams and I hope that there might be some further clarity provided in the coming days. However, in the meantime, keep going with your learning, revision and study. As I said in a previous message, time spent thinking about things that are beyond your control is time wasted. You can control your own work and study and I know this is an extremely challenging time, but you can do this! I will be in regular contact with updates as always, but to start this term please enjoy the following which involve contributions from CPC students: Florence of ‘Florence and the Machine’ had invited fans to contribute to a poem. Over ten thousand fans responded and Florence selected some of their lines to create a collective poem. Tia Boyd Burke's (6th year) lines were selected; ‘we sung choruses from our balconies, To give ourselves some company, Hiding from the phantom in our city,’ Florence Welch; A collective poem about solidarity and support through quarantine “Alone, yet together, Threads apart weaving as one, I am worried about what the future will bring for my mother, I lit a match for you, In the calmness of my room, Rituals return to the stovetops and altars arrive in our bellies. “And I shall wait three days, 20 years, Or even an age for a brighter moment, Falling in love, Like never before, On opposite sides of a long-locked door, And one day looking back, I will find a reason to hug you tighter. “I recall the hands touching the violin while exiting the church, Every petal a loved one, The gathered children looking out. “Sometimes I forget the sun, But there it is again, Spring is pouring from my mouth, I’m enjoying feeling small and perishable, Then becoming the sky, I let myself fall in. “And then it all began, This drowsiness is scary, The days blurred, I kiss your ribs because I want to feel the way you breathe, I keep the smallest stick wedged in the door. “The God in me begins to pray and knows that we sung choruses from our balconies, To give ourselves some company, Hiding from the phantom in our city, An overwhelming sense of contradiction, Staying away from what I love out of love, I was waiting for the birds to tell me it was over, Afraid as a fevered child, bound to the bed. “Just look for the grace of your mother, my daughter, the health care worker, Who comes with a cloth for your head, A long forgotten astronaut caught in the atmosphere, And as it spins aimlessly, And now alone in the dark, It remembers how to breathe, How to close its eyes, How to simply be. “Maybe this i permission, to rest, to love, to breathe, to make beauty in madness, Music in silence, to write letters, to say sorry, to feel our bodies, to feel compassion. Maybe this is a lesson in deepest truths and simplest pleasures. Will we ever again be asked to stay still to save lives? “Early spring thaws the ground enough to make it kind to girls who run barefoot through woods, Palm leaves glittering in the sky, A hurricane of fear, And despite it all, we’re still here, Only now we understand the perils of our fathers. “Somewhere out of it but right, Right here, Now is our turn to take care of you.” Please also take a moment to enjoy the wonderful creativity of Leo Brychta (5th year) and friends in their musical tribute to healthcare workers: www.youtube.com/watch?v=ECIwH1Z1qT8 Best wishes for the term ahead. Take good care everyone. J Leonard

Dear Parents/Guardians/Students, Minister for Education and Skills Joe McHugh TD has this afternoon announced updated arrangements for Junior Cycle and Leaving Certificate examinations as well as updated information about school closure. Please see the full statement here: www.education.ie/en/Press-Events/Press-Releases/2020-press-releases/PR20-04-10.html You may also be interested to read the Press Release from the management bodies of second level schools and the NAPD: Response to announcement on state examinations Association of Community and Comprehensive Schools (ACCS), Education and Training Boards Ireland (ETBI), Joint Managerial Body (JMB) and National Association of Principals and Deputy Principals (NAPD) appreciate the clarity brought by this morning’s announcement regarding the state examinations. This brings certainty for students at this difficult time as they continue to prepare for their Leaving Certificate and Junior Cycle Exams. We wish to assure the students and parents of the continued support of their schools in maintaining continuity of teaching and learning and engagement with the student cohort. This is a vitally important time for students to remain connected with their schools and their teachers, and we would encourage all students to do so and their parents to support them in this regard. We would like to acknowledge the ongoing work of the students, teachers and management in our school communities in dealing with the unique and challenging circumstances we are presented with at this time in such a positive and productive manner. In light of the revised schedule that has been announced, we would ask that our students take a complete break from their studies in this Easter period so that they can return refreshed and renewed to the learning process. We look forward to engaging further with the Department of Education and Skills to work through the operational details of this announcement over the coming weeks. (End) While there is no perfect solution in this extraordinary situation we are in, I hope that today's announcement brings some clarity to our students and their families. I wish you all every blessing this Easter and will be in touch with further news as I receive it. Take care everyone J Leonard

I hope you are all well and staying safe. Parents/Guardians, We are keen to hear from all parents regarding the experience of 'homeschooling' during the period of closure. I know from the many emails of support that learning was still very much taking place before the Easter Holidays. Your insights will help us to understand the experience for our students. If you have a moment please complete this survey bit.ly/PGss To all 6th Years, We are particularly interested to hear from you on your experience to date. We know this is an uncertain and challenging time for you and we are keen to support you as best we can. Your views will help us to understand what is working best for you. It would be great if you could complete this survey bit.ly/6thss My thanks to Ms Lennon for compiling these surveys. Well done to CPC student Kate Dooley, who had a piece on the Kilcullen Diary yesterday about her own experience of the 'unexpected break' kilcullenbridge.blogspot.com/2020/04/covid-19-and-student-unexpected-break.html Take good care everyone J Leonard

Good evening everybody, I hope this message finds you all well in these challenging times. With the weather as beautiful as it is, I am again appealing to the entire school community to continue in the national effort to 'flatten the curve' and beat the Covid-19 virus by staying at home and maintaining social distancing. It is very tempting to meet up with friends, especially as we would normally be enjoying Easter holidays, but we must continue to listen to the expert advice which will save lives. I hope that our students are managing to find a balance during this holiday period of rest and enjoyment and some study. Perhaps you didn't quite manage to keep up with the work that your teachers had provided over the past three weeks - now is an opportunity to catch up. For our exam students, this period would have always been a key time for you to revise and prepare - difficult as it is, keep going, keep preparing. For parents, Dr Nadia Ramourtar's presentation for the parent body of a fellow Le Cheile school on positive parenting of teenagers in a time of crisis(pandemic) may be of interest to you: zoom.us/rec/share/-5VRNLv-rGVOG53xtWLwW_UeEcPoT6a8hHQa-_sPn0mHLa_wEQe2XDWhPDTGschO For all, this link brings together many of the 'free' resources which have been made available during the current crisis - a mix of fun, sport, education, entertainment etc covid19.shanehastings.eu/giveback/ Thanks to Ms Carty for recommending this short video entitled Self Compassion youtu.be/-kfUE41-JFw My thanks to Ms McDonnell for compiling the attached PDF document of useful contacts should they be required during this time. Mock reports now available

Dear Parents/Guardians/Students, I hope everyone is keeping well and continuing to follow the advice we have been given regarding staying home, social distancing and washing hands. 3rd and 6th year mock reports are now available through VsWare. I know these are difficult times for exam students and in some cases the corrected papers may not have been seen by your teachers as they hadn't come back to the school before the closure. There could be reasons why marks are different to what you hoped for, such as questions missed out, timing issues etc. Remember that mock tests are designed to give you a sense of what the exam will be like. You will not have been as well prepared in February when you sat these as you will be in June. The revision you have done and are continuing to do will ensure that you do even better in the final exams. Take good care everyone. J Leonard

Good afternoon everybody, I hope you are keeping well and safe. Some of the notifications that go out on the school app are targeted to specific year groups. In order that you receive these it is important that you have selected the correct year for your son/daughter in your profile - when you open the app, click the 3 lines at the top left and click on the name that is top of that list to check details. If you make any changes be sure to click Save before leaving that page. All app notifications can be read by everyone that has the app (and by everyone on cpckilcullen.com under the News section) but you might not receive a push notification if you have selected the wrong year group for your son/daughter. For example, this week I have been in touch with 4th year parents and students to guide them in selecting subject preferences for 5th year. This is continuing through VsWare and all details and instructions were posted through the app. If you missed any of this please go back through the News & Notifications on the app from the last week. The deadline for this process is Monday 6th April. Please find attached to this notification application form and contract for those interested in Leaving Certificate Applied (For further details on this contact sabrinamills@cpckilcullen.com). Ms Mills has offered to arrange video meetings for any parents/students seeking further information on LCA (make contact through Ms Mills' email above). For 6th years, you might find this link useful: jigsawonline.ie/young-people/leaving-certificate-in-the-time-of-covid-19/ It is possibly the best piece of advice I have seen. I know it is such an uncertain time for you in particular. Ms Harney has asked me to draw all parent's attention to this important announcement: Primary and Post-Primary School Transport Scheme Applications: It should be noted that in regard to the Primary and Post-Primary School Transport Schemes, applications for School Transport for the 2020/2021 school year are currently open and can be accessed online at www.buseireann.ie/schooltransport . . The closing date for applications is Friday 24th April 2020. I want to once again thank the whole school community - students, parents and staff for your support and engagement in this extraordinary situation we are all in. The messages of support from parents have been so appreciated. I know that the staff of Cross and Passion College are working extremely hard in difficult personal and professional circumstances to ensure that we support our students in the best way possible. As we move towards the Easter holidays it is important that everyone takes a break to ensure that we tend to our own wellbeing and health and that of our families. Students would have been preparing to engage in a period of revision and rest over this period and that should continue. In the event of an extended school closure it is important that we are all refreshed and prepared for that eventuality. In the meantime I will of course keep you updated with any developments as soon as I hear them. I wish you continued good health and safety, stay home, wash your hands, save lives and support our frontline services in the amazing work they are doing. J Leonard
