As we begin Lent

A message from Fr Horan OSA The season of Lent, which we are just beginning, has one major purpose, and that is to help each one of us to become more faithful friends and followers of Jesus. The ashes, which we would normally receive on Ash Wednesday, are accompanied by the words: "Repent and Believe in the Gospel" . And that twofold invitation describes very well the two main elements involved in a successful celebration of Lent. Firstly there is the matter of repentance. We are asked to look honestly at our lives to see if there are areas in which sin and selfishness might have begun to dominate. And we are invited to take remedial action, with God's help, to better the situation. The second thing Jesus asks of us during Lent is that we try to believe more firmly in the Good News of the Gospel. And the heart and essence of the Good News is the amazing, infinite love, care, concern and compassion which our Heavenly Father has for each one us. Some years ago Pope Francis spoke the following words to a group of your folk: "It is easy to say: God loves us. We all say it. But think a bit: each one of us should ask: am I sure that God loves ME? That's not so easy to believe. But its true. This is a good exercise, to say to oneself: God loves me. 'Even at a very difficult time in my life? God loves me! Even if I have done a bad and terrible thing? God loves me! No one can take this certainty away. We must repeat it as a prayer: God loves me. God loves me. I am sure that God loves me. - Pope Francis, Feb 15th, 2017. Our giving things up or taking things up for Lent has its place, but its really secondary to the main purpose of the Season, which is that of drawing a bit closer to God and to the people iin our lives. Maybe we might look closely at our lives over the next few days in order to choose one or two areas that need straightening out, and these we might make our special Lenten Project over the next six or seven weeks. Whatever we decide to do, may God give us the courage and generosity to make this Lenten Season one of genuine change and renewal in our lives. Our prayer as Lent begins is that every member of the Friary community - students, parents, staff - will enjoy a blessed, peaceful and joy filled Lent. Through loving humility we find our way back to God! - St. Augustine.
