Let’s Spellebrate Final 2019
21 Students from 1st, 2nd and 3rd Year took part in the 2019 Coláiste Bhríde ‘Let’s Spellebrate’ Final. Each of these 21 students was nominated by their English teacher to represent their class at the final. After a number of tight rounds, a winner for each year group was decided. Isabella Ní Chonaill was the third year winner, Clodagh Dowse was the 2nd year champion and Freddie Swords was victorious in 1st year. These three students then took part in a sudden death round to decide the overall order of merit. Isabella was the overall winner with Clodagh taking 2nd place and Freddie taking 3rd place. CB now look forward to hosting the KWETB final in early May when we will welcome schools from across Wicklow and Kildare. CB are the current champions and we look forward to retaining our title.

CB Carnew 7-0 St. Joseph’s Lucan
The Minor Girls Soccer team have qualified for the Leinster League A final after a convincing semi-final win against St. Joseph’s Lucan. The game was played in great conditions at Peamount United Football Club and the girls began the game with real purpose. Despite being the away side, they were much the more aggressive of the two teams and their dominance told when Eimear Byrne scored with a powerful, long-range shot. A brace of goals from Hannah Redmond added to the score and at half time the girls led 3-0.
To their credit however, St. Joes had several dangerous attacking players and the girls had to stay focussed in the second half to maintain their lead. The pressure from Carnew did eventually begin to tell however and Zoe Katus added a fourth, before further goals from Katus (x2) and Redmond completed the scoring.
The girls were excellent today, and with this win they have set up an exciting conclusion to their season. They now have the opportunity to win the Leinster 'A' title in their very first year as a team. As always, the team had many strong performers today, including a typically assured performance at the back from Sarah Doyle. Sadhbh Buttle continues to dominate the midfield exchanges, and there was some excellent technical play from Zoe Katus. However, with her three goals, the Player of the Match today went to Hannah Redmond, who continues to give the team an excellent focal point in attack.
We want to thank St. Joseph’s for their part in what was an excellent game, and wish them all the best in the future. The girls will now look forward to a Leinster Final, a first for Carnew Soccer.

U14 Girls Football Quarter Final Victory
On Tuesday 9th April, the under 14 girls football team travelled to Coolkenno to face Heywood C.S. from Laois in the South Leinster quarter final. Both teams were up for the game from the start. Coláiste Bhríde made their intentions clear in the first 15 minutes, going 8 points up. During that time, full forward Sarah Doyle found the back of the net twice as well as putting over four points in quick succession. Although eager for the ball, the girls from Laois found it difficult to wrestle possession from the Coláiste Bhríde girls.
However they didn’t give up and their determination and tough tackling lead to a lot of breaking ball and allowed the footballers from Laois an opportunity to come back into the game. As the half time whistle approached, the girls from Heywood attacked relentlessly. They found the back of the net with a well taken goal and kicked a couple of nice points but these were matched by points from influential half forward Shauna O’Shea and lively corner forward Erin Callaghan.
The remainder of the match was a very closely matched contest however the Heywood C.S. team found it very difficult to break down the Coláiste Bhríde defense. Karen Tomkins, Roisin Byrne and Melissa Doran were immense in the half back line. Hannah Doyle at full back, untested until today’s match, showed strength and skill and provided great cover for goalkeeper Hannah Redmond. Hannah herself, was powerful and decisive in the goal.
Saidhbhe Byrne found the net in the second half and points from Aoife Stafford, Saidhbhe Byrne and one more from Sarah Doyle ensured a victory of 3-10 to 1-5.
The Coláiste Bhríde girls proved themselves worthy of a semi final place today with terrific performances all over the field, including the talented Laci-Jane Shannon who was everywhere today. This tough encounter was exactly what the girls needed in advance of the final stages of the competition and they now await eagerly for news of their semi final opposition.
Sincere thanks to Coolkenno GAA for the use of their pitch and facilities today and to Stevie Donoghue for looking after us so well.
Student Council visit to the Dáil

The Student Council had an informative and enlightening visit to Government buildings today. We had a very interesting tour which took in the Dáil and the Seanad, both of which were in session. The Dáil were discussing the housing crisis whereas the Seanad were dealing with judicial appointments. We were then met by sitting TDs James Browne and Pat Casey who lead a lively discussion with the students. We discussed climate change, gender equality and mental health services where students got the opportunity to voice their concerns and ask questions. Several of our students contributed valid arguments about the issues which they encounter in their daily lives. We were fortunate that Deputy Browne is the spokesperson on mental health so he was able to answer student questions with great detail. Overall it was a very educational and insightful experience for all and we are very greatful to Deputy Casey and Deputy Browne for their time.

Boys Junior Football Team bow out at semi-final stage

On Monday April 8th, our Junior boy's football team traveled to Greystones to face Temple Carrig in the Wicklow Junior championship. Our lads played well in the first 20 minutes and were leading for a time with good scores from Sean Hughes and great defence from Tommy Collins. However Temple Carrig's size began to win out and a string of scores saw them go in at the half leading by 5 points. At half time a number of changes were needed and the move of Shane Byrne from goalkeeper to full forward nearly paid off when he was one on one with the keeper, However the Temple Carrig keeper pulled off a great save. Temple Carrig kicked on with two devastating goals which ended the game as a contest. Temple Carrig ran out winners in the end and we wish them all the best against Dunlavin in the Final. It must be said that this young team should not be too disappointed with the result as many of them will be part of the panel again next year.

Well done to Adam Carroll, Máire Deegan, James Doyle and Isabella Ní Chonaill who travelled to Loreto Secondary School in Kilkenny on Friday evening to participate in the annual Irish Maths Teachers Association "Pi Quiz". After eight rounds of tough questions based on the Junior Cycle Maths course, they finished just five points behind the winners, Ursuline Secondary School, Thurles. A very worthwhile experience which will stand to them as they prepare for their upcoming Junior Certificate exams.
