Congratulations to our runners up Dylan Swihart, Cian Hannigan and Jamie Cronin. Their project involved the investigation of the effects of different wavelengths on photosynthesis in plants. Our winners of the Sci-Fest at School Competition Louis Flynn and Liam Keville investigated the relationship between different species of spiders under the influence of certain variables. Well done to all groups who participated in the Sci-Fest at School Competition here in the Science Department of PBC. The runners up and winners prizes were selected by the External Sci-Fest Judges who questioned the students and group projects vigorously. All groups have submitted their projects to Sci-Fest at College in Munster Technology University, where they will further present their projects to a panel of judges and compete against other cork schools.

Pres u-17s qualified for the semi-finals of the Munster Junior Cup with a hard fought 4-1 victory over Ashton in Moneygourney today. Facing into the teeth of a gale in the first half, Pres took the initiative and deservedly took the lead ten minutes in; Charlie Cummins controlled a loose ball from a Pres corner and stroked the ball into the bottom right corner with his deasog. What Cummins could do with his right foot , Sean McBride would do with his ciotog 5 minutes later; he gained possession 20 yards out, took a quick sidestep and his rifle crack of a shot buried itself in the bottom left corner; 2-0 Pres. Ashton gradually gained a foothold but when McBride had his legs swept from under him ten minutes before halftime, Sam Murphy stepped up and buried the resulting penalty. Ashton immediately responded and rattled the crossbar with Robert Barry then producing an outstanding save to leave it 3-0 at halftime. Ashton's Irish international Franco Umeh was a constant threat and deservedly pulled one back 10 minutes into the second half. However, Luke O Donnell, playing a captain's role, eased any Pres nerves by firing home after a great run to the byline and cross by Sam Murphy. 4-1 Pres and a semi-final spot secured. Robert Barry had a wonderfully assured game in goal, Harry Wixted gave an exhibition at right back and Sean McBride's left leg was a conductor's baton in midfield. It was another excellent team performance with all members of the squad showing the right attitude and spirit today. Well done lads.

Over 40 rowers raced this Saturday in near perfect conditions at Cork Head of the River, a 4 kilometre time trial from Michael Collins Bridge to Blackrock Castle. The Junior 18 squad continued their impressive winning streak with victories in the Eight, Four and Pair. This was a clean sweep in the sweep rowing category at this level! The Eight consisted of Rex O'Sullivan, Sam Hernan, Andrew O'Leary, Eoghan Ahern, Tadhg O'Flynn, Ben Mullane, Leo Porion and Darragh Buckley. The crew was coxed by Noah Giltinan. Rex, Sam, Andrew, Ben and Noah made up the Four, and Andrew and Sam rowed the Pair, bringing their medal tally to three for the day. Crews from the Junior 15 and 16 squads also raced on the day and there was a strong 5th place finish for the Junior 16 Quad of Leo Porion, Brian O'Leary, John Neville, Darrach Fanning and cox Noah Giltinan in what is traditionally a very competitive event. Next up for the club is St. Michael's Head of the River in Limerick this coming Saturday where the Junior 18s will travel to race the Junior 8.

To mark World Book Day today, the Reading Room has been officially renamed as the School Library. This is where you go to borrow books or to have a “reading class” with your English teacher or to attend book club. The library is also a place to relax with a book at breaktime. There are thousands of books and graphic novels in the library, and our resident librarian, Miss Mckenzie, will be on hand to help you find the book(s) you want, she will give you advice on finding new favourites, and will let you borrow up to four books for two weeks. So if any of that sounds interesting, the library is open daily from nine to quarter past one and any student can drop in. The library will be hosting some exciting events this week, as today is World Book Day! Students who visit the library will receive one free World Book Day token from Miss Mc kenzie. These tokens can be exchanged for either a free book from a small range of special books at bookshops like Easons, or can be used to get a discount on any book. You can also enquire from Miss Mc Kenzie about a competition to win a book-themed holiday. There are art supplies available so students can design book posters for the library!! Happy World Book Day!! Also tune into PBC Podcast, episode 3, next week to hear an in depth interview with Miss Mc Kenzie!!

Congratulations to our Transition Year students who presented their science projects in the Sci-Fest at school competition. Our students worked extremely hard since September, researching, evaluating and analysing their projects in their chosen fields of interest in the Science Investigation Module. This module is an elective subject which students can take up during their transition year program. Their commitment and passion has been admirable throughout the process. They worked extremely hard with rigorous questioning from external judges from Sci-Fest this morning. They are a credit to the school community. Big thank you to Ms. Lynch and Mr. Donnelly for their help and guidance to our students throughout the module.

We are asked to keep the plight of the Ukrainian people in our thoughts today. " Loving God, We pray for the people of Ukraine, for all those suffering or afraid, that you will be close to them and protect them. We pray for World Leaders, for compassion, strength and wisdom to guide their choices. We pray for the world that in in this moment of crisis, we may reach out in solidarity to our brothers and sisters in need. May we walk in your ways so that peace and justice become a reality for the people of Ukraine and for all the world."

Ben O’Connor ran the show in the epic clash of the two Cork giants on Thursday afternoon. The two schools, Pres and Christian’s fought ferociously, trading blow for blow and try for try. Pres gained an early lead in the first half when Fionn Roussel dotted down a well worked try which O’Connor swiftly converted. PBC’s glee was promptly ruined by a CBC try from Jack Casey just before the half time whistle, which was converted by Daire Burke. CBC dominated after kick off with a try from Ben lynch, who jumped over Sean Condon and snatched the ball from a cross-field kick, but luckily for Pres, Burke just hit the conversion narrowly wide. This didn’t knock Burke’s confidence, with him bagging himself a well worked try which he this time converted. The score was now 19-7 to CBC. The gloom started to settle on the PBC fans, but nonetheless, the cheerleaders kept the faith and rallied the crowd. The chants and hopes grew which helped bring the PBC team back from the brink of defeat. With only ten minutes to go, Sean Condon caught a spinning pass and leapt over the try line in feline fashion. This conversion was right next to the touchline but this didn’t stop heroic O’Connor who beat the fierce wind to score the two points. Pres now had a spring in their step and they looked hungry for this vital last try with the magnificent Jacob Sheahan barrelling through the Christian’s defence and Danny Sheahan causing havoc at the breakdown. It was only fit though, that the elegant Ben o Connor was the one who crossed the t’s and dotted the i’s with a diving try and once again a fabulous conversion. PBC will be looking for their 31st title on St Patrick’s Eve where they will be facing either Bandon Grammar or Crescent in a much anticipated final.
