Thank you to everyone for their enthusiastic participation in our World Book Day celebrations which were organised by our 'Rather be Reading' class. The class has been preparing for this day for a number of weeks and can be very proud of what they have achieved.

The class went to All Saints' National School where they organised a quiz for the senior classes. They had a great time and a massive thank you to Ms. Kenny for the invitation.

Our 'Caught Reading' quiz was a big hit and the winners were Tomás Rawson and Lee Dagge, who only missed one question. Our overall quiz winners were Ms Drummond's 4 Oak class, 'Drummond's Dudes',  with an impressive score of 38/40. Ms Finlay's 5th year class won the team name prize with their team name of 'Beetlejuice'.

We then completed a whole school Drop Everything And Read which was a lovely way to round off the day.

Thank you to everyone and especially school management for their support and encouragement of our activities.

Our guests explained the two referendums, family and care, of 8th March.

Our students asked a range of relevant questions and Justice Baker and Mr. O'Leary encouraged all students to have their say and discussed the importance and relevance of our Irish Constitution.

They reminded students of the need to register to vote and that students who are 16 and 17 can pre-register for future electoral events.

Our second year boys basketball team come up just short today in a challenging game against Callan Community School in the South Leinster Semi Final.

The game was played at a very high level with both teams displaying fantastic team work and skill.

The score was level at 21 points each going into the final quarter.

However Callan pulled away and with luck on their side and won on a score line of 34 points to 30.

A disappointing result for this group of young men but more to come from them next year at under 16.

On Monday March 4th, Coláiste Bhríde was delighted to host a workshop with world renowned language specialist Dr. Gianfranco Conti in the Ashdown Park Hotel. We were delighted to welcome Dr. Deirdre Keyes, CEO of KWETB, who opened the workshop and introduced Dr. Conti.

55 teachers from all over Leinster (and some from as far away as Cork) took part in this interactive and energetic workshop which focused on the importance of listening to improve student retention.

We would like to sincerely thank Dr. Conti for sharing his expertise and we are all looking forward to getting back into the classroom and putting his methods into practice.

Many thanks to our principal Linda Dunne and to our Parents’ Association for their support of this event.  A special thank also to Melissa for her help with all the admin with this event.
Grúpa Cheoil Scoop FIRST PRIZE at the Wesley Interschools Music Competition

Archived : 03 May 2024, 12:00 AM

On Saturday 2nd March, our school’s traditional music group/Grúpa Cheoil, under the direction of Mr. Somers, travelled to Wesley College Dublin as first-time entrants into the Wesley Interschools Music competition.

This group of young musicians had recently attended a residential festival over the February mid-term break in partnership with Music Generation.

Thirteen groups performed in the competition from all corners of Ireland. Each group was required to perform a continuous suite of music for five minutes.

The Carnew students were somewhat unnerved by the impressive surroundings of Wesley College, but this did not deter them. They performed brilliantly.

It became apparent that the group had made the top three when our closest rivals on the day were awarded distinctions and first-class honours.

However, it was the twelve students from Carnew who wowed Judge, Dr. Robert Harvey on the day to scoop first place.

Congratulations to all involved.

Well done to our YSI class ‘Hear to stop the fear’ whose recent experiment on the audibility of electric and hybrid cars is featured in this week’s Wicklow People newspaper and online.

The class have big plans for their project including a dog walk on Sunday, April 14th to raise both money and awareness for Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind. What many people don’t realise is that assistance dogs also have difficulty hearing these silent modern vehicles.

The class are also delighted to be working with Carnew Emmets GAA who are supporting our ‘Be Aware, Reverse with Care’ initiative which aims to encourage drivers to back into spaces and thus, improve visibility when they drive out of the space.

German Exchange Update

On day three, our German partners got the opportunity to attend some classes with their Irish partners. They then practiced their Irish dancing and learned the 'Siege of Ennis'. This was followed by a hotly contested quiz.

Day four saw the students visit Avondale Beyond the Trees. Despite the weather the students enjoyed the extensive views of Wicklow.

Day five was a trip to Dublin. It started with a tour of Croke park before visiting Trinity College and Temple Bar. The students then did some well-deserved shopping.

We are looking forward to our final day before we must say Aufwiedersehen!
