Holy Family Secondary School 8-8 St. Cross & Passion 1-5

Well done to the Senior Ladies Gaelic Football team on their comprehensive win over Cross & Passion of Kilcullen in Suncroft GAA ground on Tuesday.

After a nervy start, conceding a goal and a point, Holy Family settled into the game and managed to get a few scores on the board through Ella Murphy and Laura Jane Kaye. Tenacious defending from the Newbridge defence kept the scores down, with particular effectiveness from Lily O’Connor, Lauren Doyle and Aisling Irhue.

As Sorsha Filgate found the range with her kickouts Holy Family were able to build on the momentum and super goals from Ella Murphy and Kate Murphy pushed out the lead further.

With scoring difference being crucial to qualification from this group Holy Family never relented and a barrage of scores from Ella Murphy, Abbie Kenny and Jessica McNulty ensured a generous margin of victory for the Newbridge side.

Substitutes also played a huge part in securing the win with Abbie Kenny, Isobel Smith, Kate McNulty, Ella Donnellan and Sarah Phelan all making their mark on the game.

This team awaits the results of other groups as they go in search of Leinster glory. Bravo to all involved.

Buenos dias, October 12th was Dia de la Hispanidad. This day commemorates the arrival of Christopher Columbus in the Americas. It is a day of celebration of Spanish culture and influence around the world. It is a public holiday in Spain, where events are held in the country and families spend time together. The day is also celebrated in Latin America, but it is called Día de la Raza (the day of races) which celebrates the intercultural enrichment of Hispanic and native traditions. Different activities such as quizzes and songs were done in Spanish classes to celebrate.
Healthy Lifestyle week 2023

Last week the Home Economics Department & school community celebrated Healthy Lifestyle Week 2023. There were lots of informative posters, funny food jokes & displays around the school. We had two main aims - encouraging sustainability through using seasonal food, and inspiring healthy lifestyle changes, particularly related to sugar-sweetened drinks.

There was a food pyramid display documenting serving size of different food groups, and their carbon footprint i.e. the environmental impact of the product. Some products were grown in Ireland, while others were imported from abroad. Students were also invited to enter a competition where they were challenged to cook or bake a dish using a fruit or vegetable that was currently in season in Ireland.

Our 3rd Year Home Economic students assembled a display documenting the sugar content of some of the most popular sugar-sweetened drinks consumed by students in HFSS. They were shocked to find out that some drinks contained 56g of sugar (Monster Mango Loco) and a staggering 70g of sugar (BPM Berrie Red). Free sugar intake from food and drinks should be limited to 4-9 teaspoons per day (16-45g). Their 'Sugar Shock' display certainly inspired some of their peers to swap to water (0g sugar!)

The Holy Family were the first school in Ireland to visit to the Andy Warhol Exhibition titled ‘Three Times Out’ currently being exhibited in the Hugh Lane Gallery, Dublin. The exhibition is the largest collection of Andy Warhol’s work to be exhibited in Ireland featuring 250 works of art including the iconic Campbell’s soup can and Marilyn Monroe screen prints.

"His work explored the relationship between artistic expression and the flourishing consumer culture of the 1960s, new technology and celebrity status, as well as mortality, in a diverse body of works that underpins his artistic genius." - Barbara Dawson, curator and director of the Hugh Lane Gallery.

Following this, the students visited the National Gallery of Ireland, where they went on a guided tour of artworks which link directly into their Leaving Cert Course. Students had the opportunity to engage with, analyse and discuss the works of art that were of interest to them.

There are several sporting and extracurricular activities available for students in the school. We encourage our students to become involved and explore interests in school.

As a school we are currently focusing on developing our ‘Whole School Approach to Wellbeing’.  Engaging in sporting or extracurricular activities enables students to develop teamwork, communication, relationships, and a sense of belonging, all of which helps students to develop socially and be successful in school.  Participating in sporting or extracurricular activities helps students develop their self-esteem and helps develop life skills.  It provides students with opportunities to take a break from their studies and is proven to boost academic performance overall.  We encourage our students to participate in some activities.
