Last week, two of our 5th Year students Haleema Lamidi and Stephanie Rimbi took part in Round 3 of the Irish qualifiers for the European Olympiad of Experimental Science in DCU. Haleema and Stephanie qualified for Round 3 by winning medals in Round 2, for being among the top achieving students in Chemistry and Biology. After a challenging two days of work and tests in the DCU labs, Stephanie was awarded a spot on the Irish Team for the European finals which will be held in Luxembourg in April.

This is the third year in a row a student from Dominican College has represented Ireland in this international competition, with Lucy Garrett (Physics 2022) travelling to the Czech Republic and Melaniya Stolbova (Physics 2023) travelling to Latvia. Only 6 students are chosen to represent Ireland each year, showing what a great achievement this is for our students.

We wish Stephanie all the best in Luxembourg.

Last Thursday January 18th some 5th Year students took part in the VEX Robotics competition in ATU Galway, which was sponsored by Boston Scientific. This group of students had to design, build and code their own robot over the last few months, and then have it take part in a number of matches on the tournament day.

There were 28 qualifying matches in all held on the day, with the group from Dominican College finishing in 2nd place out of the 14 teams present. They then teamed up with Calasanctius College Oranmore for the knockout stages, winning their quarter final, but unfortunately being beaten in the semi final by the overall winners.
This is the first year of the school taking part in this event and the students learned so much about design, building and coding as well as teamwork and resilience from the event itself. There were many hours of work put into the robot, with the students working on the design and build at lunchtimes, after school and even during their holidays. The school is very grateful to the support of Boston Scientific to be able to take part in this competition.

5th Year student, Honor Faughnan, has successfully competed in the semi-final of the ninth annual Poetry Aloud competition, organised by the National Library of Ireland (NLI) and Poetry Ireland. She will now proceed to the national final, which will take place in the National Library of Ireland in Dublin on 1st December. The event will see 31 students from across the country compete in the junior, intermediate and senior categories for the Seamus Heaney Poetry Aloud Award. Poetry Aloud is an annual poetry speaking competition for post-primary school students across the island of Ireland and was launched in 2006 as Yeats Aloud, becoming Poetry Aloud in 2007. Since then, it has grown enormously from just a few hundred entries to 1,800 entries in 2017. Honor saw off competition from participants who travelled from schools nationwide and will compete in next month’s final in the senior category. Each category winner will receive €300 as well as book tokens to the value of €300 for the winner’s school library. An overall winner will be chosen from the three category winners and will receive a further €200, the Seamus Heaney perpetual trophy and a book. The late Seamus Heaney was a significant supporter of Poetry Aloud. In 2009, he was presented by the British Library with the David Cohen Prize for Literature. In addition to the main award, the winner each year nominates the recipient of a subsidiary prize. In nominating Poetry Aloud for the award, Seamus Heaney cited the extraordinary way in which the competition seeks to celebrate the joy of speaking and listening to poetry as well as the fact that there is a strong North-South dimension to the competition.
