TY News December 2018 The past month in TY has been very busy. In November we were privileged to visit Closutton Stables in Carlow, the home of champion National Hunt horse trainer, Willie Mullins where we were given a stable tour , and an introduction to Willie and champion jockey Ruby Walsh along with many of his equine stable stars such as Faugheen , Min, Laurina , etc. There are more than 200 horses in training in the yard so this is a very large operation employing many staff and contributing enormously to the local economy; It was exciting to see the maestro Willie giving orders to sixty work riders and horses on the gallops.all preparing for the December campaign. Yesterday alone between Punchestown and Cork the yard sent out 7 winners. What an oppurtunity for us! As part of our theme for November which was 'physical and mental wellbeing', we had Alex Walsh deliver a personal safety course over two days. Alex is an ex British policeman with lots of experience in teaching the concept of 'consent' ,which is so topical as well as' staying safe'. The lads learned a lot from him i know. He has a video on youtube which parents might view and its title is "Use your brain, not your fist". We had a fascinating theatre workshop continuing the theme of wellbeing, delivered by Shane Casey, aka Billy Murphy from 'The Young Offenders', a popular tv show which the boys enjoyed. Shane worked with John McCarthy also from The Graffitti Theatre Company. Last Tuesday the TY group travelled to University of Limerick for their 'taster' day where the boys experienced college life by going to a number of lectures in various departments; this is an excellent way to start the conversation of subject choice for college and to ignite ambition for Leaving Certificate. We have visited Trinity and in February we will have another taster day in U.C.D. Tomorrow, Tuesday 11th Dec., Miss Kelly has organised a trip to dublin ice skating. All details from Miss Kelly. On Thursday 13th this week, we will walk to the Dunamaise Theatre to support the girls next door who perform 'The High School Musical, . Full uniform and warm school jacket in case it rains. The parent teacher meeting for TY is on Thursday at 4.15-6.45 VERY IMPORTANT DATES: MONDAY and TUESDAY 17/18th December 2018....... James Fahey , Barrister will give a full two days on Irish Law and prepare the boys for a mock trial which is always fun. There will be an inter school mock trial competition in the new year. Every student must attend. Finally work experience report forms have been given out for this term. Students should respectfully ask employers to fill them in and return them to me, All forms are always outside the TY office in the event I missed seeing someone. Also a reminder : if your son changes his work placement , he needs to fill in the appropriate form and return it to me. The short courses begin on Tuesday January 8th from 2 till 4pm and run for the following 6 Tuesdays. Students can choose from a number of course as follows; Photography, Self Defence, Strength and Conditioning, Toast Masters, Debating and mock trial prep, and Driver theory test preparation. Most courses will be directed by external professionals. Students in so far as possible will be given their first choice but that is not always possible. The date for receiving these option sheets is next Monday by 11am . A box will be outside the TY office for completed course option forms. Eadaoin O'Connell and I thank you for you support and wish you and your families a Happy Christmas and New Year! L. G. and E.O'C.

For the duration of the mock exams, we will only be able to take pre orders for hot food before 9am. At the 11am break- rolls, panini's, and sandwiches may be pre ordered only. So anyone requiring to order Hot Food must pre order it before 9am each day. The window is too tight for us to organise everything for 12.15. We will have extra Hot Food available daily to facilitate this. In addition to this we will also be allowing students to pre order any Hot Items for the next day at lunchtime the previous day.
