Dear Parents/Guardians, We've had a highly productive first term, with workshops, guest speakers, outings and in particular the 3 day trip to Carlingford. A huge thank you to all the teachers and staff involved. Students have been to Emo House and gardens, The TY Expo in Punchestown, an Art outing to Waterford, Skill Zone in Dublin ; half the students visited the RACE academy in Kildare as well as Kildangan Stud, whilst the other half trekked the Slieve Bloom. Students have been complimented for their excellent behaviour and good manners on these outings and also during the organised Tuesday activities . In house activities included guest speakers for Mini Company, a two day Healthy Lifestyle programme, a visit from Robert Sheehan from 'Love / Hate" etc, and Gavin Hennigan, sports nutritionist came in along with Pat Mc Neeley of the "Drive for Life" programme. The overall response from the employers of the students Wednesday work experience has been very positive , so keep up the good works lads and please inform Ms.Gillson of any changes to your placements! Several students have been lucky enough to secure interesting week long placements e.g. with the Gardai ( Niall Carey, Eoghan Leonard and Colm Byrne), Pfizer (Ruairi Coss) and GMIT Campus Letterfack(Rossa O'Dufaigh) Congratulations to all the following students : the teams who recently participated in the Inter-Schools Debating competition in Portlaoise College and the Poetry Aloud competition. Cian MacGearailt and Nebjosa Kuktic were declared best speakers during the debates and Cian has successfully got through to the next round of Poetry Aloud Cian also is to take the lead in the forthcoming Portlaoise Panto production of "Beauty and the Beast" well done to him. Ms. Carroll's debating team also go through to the next round. Well done lads. John Keogh succeeded in getting a much coveted place on the Royal College of Surgeons "My Health TY Programme ", a week long course for students interested in pursuing a career in medicine. The "Battle of Wits" team captained by David Egan will take part in an Inter-Schools table quiz in Mountmellick Library on the 14th of November. The only negative note in all of this is that a number of students chose to absent themselves from the Tuesday activities and outings. These students need to be aware that they are in danger of losing credits in their end of year assessments. We need parents to support us in this. I would also like to remind students that project deadlines must be kept and copies of the work have to be put into their portfolios. On behalf of Ms.Gillson TY Programmes Coordinator and myself, Ms O'Connell,TY Coordinator, I would like to take the opportunity wish you all a happy Mid Term break, and hope that all the students come back energised for the busy term ahead!!
Enjoy the Midterm

Healthy Lifestyle Programme for 1st Years

Today, three of our 1st Year classes spent the entire morning engaging in workshops which will make them more aware of Nutrition, Fitness, life coping skills, goal setting and understanding how a balanced lifestyle is so important were some of the topics they covered. Two hours were spent in the Lecture Room and two hours were spent outside participating in activities. The feedback from the lads as they left the school was very positive, they had fun in addition to learning about a healthy lifestyle. In two weeks time, on October 27th, the other three 1st Year classes will do the same. It is planned to extend this programme to all class groups in the coming months. The cost is €2 per student, which is just a small contribution towards the programme. We feel, as a school, that is worth our own investment for the overall mental and physical health of our students.
