An innovative new artwork, created by representatives of all nine second level schools in County Laois, was launched by Minister Charlie Flanagan at Laois Education Centre on Thursday 7th April. The ceramic wall sculpture was the result of a partnership between Laois Commemorations Committee and Laois Education Centre, with funding from the national Ireland 2016 programme. It was designed and created by students and teachers from Portlaoise College, St Fergal’s College Rathdowney, Scoil Chriost Rí, Portlaoise, St Mary’s CBS Portlaoise, Mountrath Community School, Clonaslee College, Heywood Community School, Mountmellick Community School, and Coláiste Íosagáin, Portarlington, with assistance from artists Póilín Ní Aoláin and Maeve Sookram. The project started with an invitation to all nine Second Level Schools in Laois to participate. A teachers’ workshop was held with Dr. Lisa Godson, a lecturer in NCAD, in November 2015. This workshop encouraged debate and gave a fresh perspective on 1916, its objects and symbolism. Artist Póilín Ni Aoláin and ceramicist Maeve Sookram assisted teachers in researching the period and selecting images for the artwork. The artwork was designed by the students and teachers during a workshop at Laois Education Centre, facilitated by Póilín and Maeve. Two days were spent by the students creating the piece on clay tiles based on the drawings and research they had carried out. The ceramic artwork will have a permanent home at Laois Education Centre, where it will serve as a reminder both of the collaboration of all the schools and of the 1916 Commemorations. Students involved in the project from St Mary's CBS included Sam Bolton, Jack Farrell, Jason Woods and Aleksejs Gusevs. pictured below; St. Mary’s CBS teacher Sarah Williams and students Jack Farrell and Aleksejs Gusevs receive their presentation from Minister Charlie Flanagan TD; Artist and co-ordinator Poilin Ni Aolain and Yvonne Lacumber,
