Wellbeing Week at St. Jarlath’s College.

Last week was a busy one at St. Jarlath’s as the wellbeing team organised a packed line up of events for Mental Health Awareness and Wellbeing week. The focus was on raising awareness of the importance of minding our mental health and the tag line of the week “Be kind to your Mind” was a most suitable theme. Staff and students engaged in many events throughout the week, each placing an emphasis on different ways in which we can take care of our mental health just as we should care for our physical health. In fact the two are very much interdependent and this was highlighted in one of the most popular events “A mile and a smile”. Students across all year groups enjoyed an opportunity to walk a mile around our fabulous walks to emphasize the importance of fresh air and exercise. Fresh fruit was made available to staff and students on completion of the walk and this proved very popular with everyone! The mobile phone challenge for staff and students involved giving up their mobile phone for an extended period of time and to make us all realise how reliant we have become on these devices and also how freeing it is to be without them for a while.! There were raffle prizes up for grabs for all participants and the winners were announced on Thursday. Other activities such as guest speakers from Youth Work Ireland, art competitions, “Drop everything and Chat” and debates were also held throughout the week. Another popular activity was a “Mindful minute” where students were taught mindfulness techniques that be employed anywhere and at any time. Not forgetting our staff, a yoga session was held after school to cater for our hardworking staff and to remind us all that in order to look after others we must also look after ourselves. The week ended in the highlight of the Open mic session at lunchtime in the Ref. Music was provided by our students and we had a wide variety of genres from trad to rock. Students were entertained and it was a lovely way to end the week. The winner of the open Mic Session was Aaron Lawless in First Year. All in all this was a most enjoyable and enlightening week that helped students to realise that being kind to our mind is vitally important and that there are small steps that we can take that make a huge difference. Our well-being team are always looking for ways to enhance wellbeing in the College so if any student, staff member or parent has ideas please email wellbeing@jarlaths.ie. Many thanks to our wellbeing team and all members of our school community who embraced the Wellbeing week!

Valeo visit Rang Iarlaith

On Tuesday 16th of October we had Valeo Vision Systems visit the students in Rang Iarlaith. Chris Flynn and Stephanie Ryan from Valeo brought one of the demonstration cars and explained some of the different features that Valeo are currently developing. For example the wing mirrors have been removed and replaced with cameras and monitors. The students then got an opportunity to get a demonstration on how the car operates and from the display, they could see how the cameras are used to project an overhead view of the area surrounding the car. The students got to switch between the monitors as the car was performing different tasks for example reversing into a parking space. The students really enjoyed the visit as did the staff. The students were absolutely delighted with what they had been shown and taken away from it. Thanks so much to Valeo!
