TY students were off to the National Convention Centre today for the ECOUNESCO National Finals! Students from all over the country presented projects on the environment & sustainability. The Convention Centre was a hive of activity, literally, with many schools focusing on the plight of bees. Judges made their decision and the awards ceremony got under way. Alas it was not to be today for our fantastic projects, but what a standard at this year’s competition! Well done to all the finalists. There were inspiring words from Richard Bruton, Minister for the Environment, hopefully the government will accelerate its roll out of environmental protection policies after declaring a climate emergency! A fantastic day out for all concerned and wonderful to see so many young students from all over the country passionate about environmental issues.

As our delegates are preparing to enter their final assembly it is important to reflect on what has been an amazing experience for our TY team. This prestigious event has truly been an experience that students will remember for a lifetime. At this stage it is important to acknowledge the contribution of a number of people. Firstly, the event would not have happened without the huge efforts of teacher Ms Laura Hurley. Ms Hurley gave unselfishly of her time and expertise to bring this project to fruition, putting in hours of work behind the scenes. Thanks to Mr John Kelly and Ms Brighid Cannon for supporting the endeavour. To Ciarán Cannon, without your help with World Wise Global Schools this would not have been possible. To Anne Rabbitte, thank you also for your efforts in this regard. To Sean Canney; TD, Cllr Shaun Cunniffe and Eamonn O’Cuiv, your financial donations greatly assisted in allowing our students to participate. To our TY students, thank you for embracing this concept and giving it your all, even if it meant giving up a week of your holidays. You have done yourself, and St Jarlath’s College, proud! Finally, to the parents, thank you for allowing your son to participate and for trusting us with this life-changing programme. It could not have been done without your support. SAIMUN 2019 has been truly remarkable, roll on SAIMUN 2020!

What a fantastic day for our TY students at the Pathways 2019, Careers Fair at the Galmont Hotel Galway. The keynote speaker at the event was Dr Niamh Shaw, Science Foundation Irl Award Winner for #STEM communication with her talk on the Science of Space exploration. She encouraged students to follow their dreams and not just ‘follow the herd’ to their local college. Other speakers included Orla Collins, Senior Software Engineer with IBM Ireland (Galway), Taryn Schuller, Scrum Master at DXC Technology and Professor Laoise McNamara of NUI,Galway’s College of Engineering & Infomatics. ‘From benchside to pitchside’ was a fascinating talk by Dr Lisa Ryan, Head of Dept of Natural Sciences at GMIT. As well as these speakers, TYs were able to visit the multitude of stands on display. Well done to Peter from the Galway Advertiser and his team for organizing this fabulous Careers event. A special well done to our own TY helpers on the day, well done Alex, Mark & Aaron.
