Science Week 2018. This month we participated in 'Science Week' in SJC. The science department ran numerous competitions from First Year right through to Leaving Cert. Our First Years designed posters titled 'Plastic Planet' and the winner was Paddy Keane. Second Years and Junior Certs students participated in classroom based quizzes with questions from all 4 areas of the new JCT science curriculum. Mario, one of our Spanish students, won the fifth year 'Question of the Week Competition'. That competition proved to be very popular within the school with many interesting answers returned! Our Leaving Cert students participated in a quiz in the Ref. The quiz covered all 4 science subjects offered at senior cycle and proved to be very competitive. Some students even made slime! A successful week overall and many thanks to the Science Department for all their hard work! #scienceweek2018

On Thursday the 14th of March, a group of 27 TY students along with their business teachers, Mrs. Marie Comer and Ms. Laura Hurley travelled to the RDS in Dublin for the annual AIB Future Sparks Festival. The festival is an Enterprise, Innovation and Careers event for senior students across Ireland. Students were first spoken to by Peter Cosgrove (UCD, Keynote Speaker on the Future of Work, Diversity, Talent & Technology). He talked about how the future jobs market is going to change due to advances in technology. He informed the audience of about 2,500 students that the majority of the most popular jobs in twenty years’ time haven’t been created yet! A talk given by career guidance counsellor and motivational speaker, John Doran was most enlightening. He finished his talk with a quote for all students to apply to their career aspirations, “If it’s meant to be, it’s down to me”. Further talks from industry leader in technology, lifestyle and business emphasised that the students of today need the following skills and characteristics for the future: Problem Solving, Creativity, Enthusiasm and Team work.

Yesterday was an exciting day for our First Year basketball players as they hosted their first home game this season. They were also officially presented with new kit very generously sponsored by John Joyce of DNG. Top scorer in Tuam's National League teams of the 80's, when he was a team mate of Mr John Moran our teacher and basketball coach, Mr Joyce is a great supporter of basketball and we are delighted with his sponsorship and support of our students. Many thanks also to teacher and coach Mr John Moran who has many years experience in all areas of basketball and is putting in enormous work coaching and developing basketball in St. Jarlath’s College. Match Report: St Jarlath's 16 Dunmore 12 Israel Adewumni led the scoring and rebounding as St Jarlath's qualified for the First Year (Division C) final with a tense win over Dunmore. The first three quarters all finished level but a stronger finish by the home team sealed the win. Besides Adewumni, Enda Farrell, Rocher Adeyeye, Diarmuid Murphy and Sean Dempsey posed the greatest scoring threat. Jonathan Newman and Fadel Affo stood out at the defensive end. The team are now through to the finals! Photographer: Francis Stockwell

A reminder to parents / guardians to ensure that all parts of the school uniform are clearly marked with your son’s name, especially the school tie which should be marked on the inside, for identification purposes. There has been an increase in students losing their ties and they would be much easier to recover if they were clearly marked. Runners are strictly forbidden and all parts of the school uniform must be worn at all times. Any student not in full uniform and in breach of the grooming policy will be sanctioned. Continuous breaching of school uniform and grooming policy could result in suspension. We appreciate your support in this issue. Thank you.

On Thursday March 7th, the students from Rang Iarlaith along with Mr. Moran, Mr. Houlihan and SNA’s Niamh O'Connor, Donnacha Fahy and Noel Kelly visited Sun Street Studios on Bishop Street. While there, they had the pleasure of meeting Sawdoctor legend Leo Moran and music producer Kenny Ralph. Kenny showed the students around the studio while Leo tuned his guitar. After asking the students what songs they would like to hear, Leo sang N17, To Win Just Once and other famous songs. They showed the students into the sound proof room where all the recordings happen and even let them have a go themselves! Both Leo and Kenny chatted to the lads, explaining who recorded in the studio and Leo explained how The Sawdoctors got their name. It was a visit enjoyed by all. Special thanks to both Leo Moran and Kenny Ralph for the kindness they showed the students. Thank you to teachers Mr. Moran and Mr. O’Loingsigh who organised the visit. It was a trip that students and staff won’t forget!!
