On Thursday 21st February Richard Creighton, Joey Duggan, Cian Mullins and Michéal Quinn-Walsh took part in their first outdoor training session.. This training is part of the preparation for the Gold Gaisce Adventure Journey which is to take place for one week in the Highlands of Scotland . Thursday’s mountain route called Bencorbeg-Derryclare Horseshoe, was planned as day practicing use of map and compass. Needless to say with the ever changing weather we are experiencing at the moment it did not go to plan. It was a great day out but the hike was cut short due to stronger than forecasted windy conditions. The meal on the way home was great! Hoping next day will be sunny and calm. Mr. Marsden

On Tuesday 5th of February the students in Rang Iarlaith along with one of their teachers Mr. Keane and SNAs Niamh O'Connor, Donnacha Fahy and Noel Kelly visited Tuam Fire Station. This is a new facility which was opened in September, 2018. They were warmly greeted by Fire Station Head Officer Paul Quinn, Acting Sub Officer Ger Brogan, Driver Mechanic Peter Kelly and Fire Fighter Paul Taylor who kindly showed the group around the Station. The students began the tour in the locker room where they had the opportunity to try on some fire fighting gear such as helmets and jackets. The group were then invited into the main area where the Fire Engines were parked. A demonstration was given on the breathing apparatus and equipment used during the different emergencies. The Fire Officers discussed their part time post, logistics on how to get to the station when they get the call, the rate of call outs per year and the major category call outs. The students were told about the importance of following fire fighters instructions, fire prevention, evacuation, home escape plan and fire extinguishers. It was a fascinating tour and an impressive facility. The students really enjoyed the visit as did the staff. A big thank you to the Fire Officers who conducted the tour. They do a fantastic job in our community.
