St Jarlath's College Senior Rugby team qualified for the semi-final of the Top Oil Senior Emerging Cup with a hard fought 19-12 victory over St Joseph's, Foxford. The game was level 5-5 at the break with Daniel Concannon scoring a well worked try in the corner. Jarlath's enjoyed wind advantage in the second half and made it count with tries from captain Luke Cronin and fellow centre Ryan Lenihan. Both tries were converted leaving Jarlath's 19-5 ahead with ten minutes left. However Foxford refused to die and a converted try with five minutes left made for a nervy finale. However, the Jarlath's defence was resolute and held out for a seven point victory. The semi-final vs St Paul's, Oughterard takes place at 11 am on Wednesday 13th at Tuam RFC. On the same day and venue the St Jarlath's Junior Rugby team play the Emerging Cup semi-final against Pres Headford at 1 pm. All support would be welcomed and appreciated.

Many thanks to our good friend Jim Carney who gave a very informative and enjoyable talk to First Year Students in St. Jarlath’s College this week, as part of our Literacy week. The talk focused on the enduring importance of creative writing in the teaching of English at 2nd level and the role that media (including social media) and the evolving nature of journalism plays in our society today. It covered the many facets and aspects of Jim’s individual career that spanned over 50 years. -The first presenter of The Sunday Game. -Radio and TV commentating. -Reporting on national news and current affairs for The Irish Independent in the early 1970s. -Sports Editor of The Tuam Herald. -Current Affairs host on local radio. Many thanks to Mr Jim Carney for giving so generously of his time.
