Second year trip to Spain

Teachers Maria Anton, Karen Staunton, Carla McDowell and Eamonn McCabe led a group of 39 second year students on a highly enjoyable and successful trip to Cataluña from Thursday 11th to Sunday 14th of April. The group met up in Terminal 2 at 4.15 and thankfully all had their passports. The fight was on time and we landed in El Prat airport in the heart of the beautiful city of Barcelona. The weather was lovely, about the same as a nice Dublin summers day, but Ms Anton insisted it was freezing. The coach dropped us to the imposing and enormous bowl and football temple that is Camp Nou. We had lunch and then the tour. We did the interactive tour and stood pitch side. We sat in the dugout and explored the cavernous stadium from top to bottom. We also had the virtual reality experience, though we all looked and behaved a bit strangely while wearing the headsets. Back on the bus and into the heart of Barcelona. At the harbour we boarded our Golindrina for a waterborne tour of the harbour and a short journey out to sea. It was quite rough out there and a few turned green, but it was a great experience. We then visited the amazing Park Guell on the outskirts of the city. Gaudi’s masterpiece was stunning, though the green parrots squawking in the trees were a surprise. We then headed for our base in Salou, Hotel Jaime1. The hotel is huge and groups of students from all over Spain and Europe were in residence. We checked in and found our rooms and had dinner in the enormous all you can eat buffet in the restaurant. Evening was free time and the lads could explore the hotel and the surrounding area, some taking a walk to the beach, some stocking up for room parties at the local supermarket. A game of football on the astro beside the pool was started. A good first day! Day 2 started with breakfast and the short walk to Port Aventura. After a short delay while the passes were sorted, the lads were released into the park. The lads asked at the start to finish in the park about 3pm so they could get back to the pool and head to the beach or town. This was agreed and within seconds the 39 had dispersed not to seen by the leaders again until the roundup at the end. Day 3 was a trip to the mountain monastery of Montserrat. Several of us were a bit nervous about the cable car up the mountain side. Watching from below was spectacular with the blue sky against the beautiful saw-toothed mountain peaks and the yellow cable car. The last night’s parties and shenanigans saw out the evening and with very little sleep for some, saw us head to Reus airport in Salou. Apart from one oversized bag all went smoothly and we flew back to a cold, miserable Dublin and the warm embrace of our loved ones. Thanks so much to Ms Staunton, Ms McDowell and Ms Anton for all their hard work, common sense, friendship, intellectual conversation, craic and mercy. Ms Antons’s meal on the balcony in 24 degrees of sunshine is a great memory and her Spanish and Catalan really made life so much easier. Sorry to Ms Staunton and Ms Anton as it turned out Ms McDowell and myself can sleep through almost anything. Thanks to the parents and guardians who made this all possible and of course Ms McCaul and Marian College. Marathon group travel were brilliant. Thanks Padraig and Tatjana. Most thanks must go to the 39. You were really good company (well, most of the time!) and made it a really memorable experience. Thanks. Dr McCabe
