2nd Year students Aaliyah clohessy and Ava McGahon represented Dominican College in the BT Young Scientists Exhibition in January with their app Re-Wire. “We wanted to create an app that would be straight-forward and hassle free for students to use and improve their study time by not using their mobile phone during the duration of their study”. The Re-Wire App has been developed to minimize the never ending distractions caused by your mobile phone when you are driving, in a lecture, out with friends, studying, doing your homework, reading a book, watching TV and so on. The girls were inspired by their own experiences with mobile distraction and then came up with the idea of RE-Wire after an app developed by Toyota Ireland was launched. This app rewards points to the driver If their mobile phone remains face down. These points will eventually add up to purchasing a hot drink at any Topaz outlet nationwide. The same idea went into the Re-Wire app; the student opens the app and places their mobile face down, Notifications from all other applications will be blocked out and after 15 minutes points will begin being received as a reward for not touching their phone, but doing so any time before that will bring them back to 0 points. The use of gamification has been brought into the app to motivate students to carry on using Re-Wire. This technique drives them to beat their scores or possibly their friends scores if they’re feeling the competitive side of the app. Aaliyah and Ava have carried out an online survey to see how their classmates are finding the app, and so far the results are very positive. They found that 81% agreed the app has improved concentration and the amount of study time students have has increased because they are spending less time online. Re-Wire has been developed for use on android phones and is now available on the Play Store under the name: S Clohessy!

Taylors Ranked as Top School in the Country in BTYS Project

This year a group of BT Young Scientists from Cork, undertook a project to rank post-primary schools in Ireland. This was born out of the fact that the league tables that appear in national media every year are based on incomplete, inaccurate and often out of date data. Indeed, this year, the former Education editor of Independent Newspapers, John Walsh, in a preface to published tables, warned readers that the information in them is not a representation of school success but just a measure of where students from that school attended college. The data does not form an adequate means of ranking schools as: a) They do not record students who went to university outside the island of Ireland (last year a number of Dominican College students went to universities in the USA, the UK and Poland). b) Students who left school in previous years or have switched courses may also be included in the figures for this year. c) Some students, depending on how they completed college applications, may be counted twice on the system. d) This data is only about students’ progression to third level, it does not take into account other important information about student progress and achievement. The students carrying out this project looked internationally for more accurate and holistic means of ranking schools. Their research identified the measures put in place by the Education Commission of the States (which compiles data on how American states measure the quality of schools across the USA), the University of Sydney, the American Psychological Association, the British Office for Standards and USI. Following their research, they compiled a set of criteria for evaluating schools in Ireland. These included: a) The percentage of students progressing to third level. b) The socio-economic status of the town/city in which the school is located. c) Each school’s provision of additional areas for student development and education such as sporting, artistic, cultural, scientific and academic extra-curricular activities. d) Each school’s participation and success in national competitions. The project team applied these criteria, with relevant weightings, to a sample of 100 Irish post-primary schools and based on the tools used to measure the quality of schools in the USA, Dominican College was ranked in 1st place out of the 100 schools in recognition of both the academic success and achievement of its students but also its provision of a wide ranging educational experience for its students and the success of its students in national competitions. The top 10 ranked schools in the survey were: 1. DominicanCollege, Taylor’s Hill, Galway. 2. Meanscoil Naomh Uinseann, Dundalk. 3. Clongowes Wood College, Co. Kildare. 4. St Joseph of Cluny Secondary School, Dun Laoghaire, Dublin. 5. Gaelcholáiste Luimnigh, Limerick. 6. Notre Dame School, Dublin. 7. Mount Anville, Dublin. 8. Coláiste Bhride, Carnew, Co. Wicklow. 9. Jesus and Mary College, Dublin. 10. Loreto Convent, Wexford.
