Michaeli who completed her Leaving Certificate in 2014 in Coláiste Bhríde, Carnew graduated from Maynooth University in Defence Studies in November 2021. Michaeli comes from a well established equestrian family based at Butterfy Farm, Camolin. Having completed her time in Coláiste Bhríde she travelled abroad and then returned to Boleybawn Equestrian, Tinahely. Her dream was to join the army and she set her sights on doing just that. She applied to the army as an Equitation Cadet in 2019 and on being accepted she was offered a position in the Army Equitation School on completion of her 17 month Cadetship in the Curragh Camp. Such a sought after position did not daunt this highly determined and talented young lady who set her sights on achieving the very best possible as regards Army Equitation, the Defense Forces and her studies at Maynooth University. In a few short years, Michaeli was commissioned an officer of rank, as 2nd Lieutenant in March 2021. She is now based at McKee Barracks and looks forward to representing the Army in show jumping. Knowing 2/LT Byrne, she will give it her total commitment.

Thursday seen our U16 and U19 Lads teams play host to Creagh College. Our U16 team faced a Creagh side also unbeaten which meant the winners would top the group and progress to the semi finals after Christmas. The game was close all the way to the very end with neither team giving up much. The game flowed and both teams fought for the lead, neither team where able to build a big lead. With 30 seconds to go Creagh lead by 1 point when Eddie Cullen took a long distance three pointer that went straight in, to win the game for our U16. It must be said it was brilliant game and hard luck to a strong Creagh side In the second game our U19 went to battle and gave it their all. In the closing minutes Creagh pulled away after a very close game to win the game and they now progress. We wish a Creagh well in the U19 semi final as we look forward to three semi finals at U16 boys and girls and U19 Girls after Christmas.

Last week our senior Concern team successfully opposed the motion ‘The challenges to ending world hunger are insurmountable.’ The team of Isabella Ni Chonaill, Elise Davidson, Seán Doyle and Saffi Vickers passionately argued the case that achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goal ‘0 Hunger’ was achievable through the use of GMO crops and examining the effectiveness of our current food distribution systems. In addition to this, our team presented a variety of ways in which we can reduce food waste and increase production sustainability. The league phase this year takes place live over zoom as a result of the pandemic. The team look forward to their next debate in January. .

On Wednesday 15th December, Transition Year students hosted our annual outdoor TY Christmas Market. This year we welcomed first and second year students of Coláiste Bhríde to the event, along with students from neighbouring schools, Scoil Aodán Naofa and All Saints National School. The market was a hive of activity and excitement for all in attendance, with decorative Christmas lights and Christmas music setting the festive scene. Visitors had an opportunity to browse and purchase an array of high quality products that were on display on the day. The TY Christmas Market acts as an opportunity for TY students to sell their wares, but also as a stepping stone to the County Wicklow Student Enterprise Competition. Of the forty plus mini-companies in attendance on the day, ten mini-companies will be chosen to progress to the next stage of the competition. A special word of thanks to our judges, Mr. Damien Byrne (Eason's Bookshop, Gorey), Mr. Noel Comer and Ms. Caroline Young (Victor's Newsagents, Carnew), who were so generous in the giving of their time for the event. Further photos will be available in the gallery section of the app.
