Congratulations to I.A.B.A. Munster Boxing Champion Evan Mulcahy(1A30) who competed in the final on Saturday in Dungarvan, Co Waterford, representing his Club and County. Evan will now progress to the All Ireland Championship in Dublin's National Stadium next month.
Congratulations to our U16 Soccer Squad Champions 2023, following an exciting final yesterday. CBC won 5-4 on penalties after a 3 all draw after extra time.
Mr John Lonergan delivered a presentation today to all Fourth and Fifth Year students. John worked with the Irish Prison Service from the age of 20 and has worked in Limerick, Portlaoise and Dublin. He is the former Governor of Mountjoy Prison. He spoke to students about Social Justice, the Four Pillars of Wellbeing and Mental Health.
Professor of Law, Louise Crowley, addressed all Fifth and Sixth Year students today. Professor Crowley is Director of the ‘UCC Bystander Intervention Programme’. The Bystander Intervention programme seeks to enable and effect cultural change through educating and empowering participants to collectively demand a zero-tolerance approach to all forms of sexual harassment and abuse. The programme recognises the capacity for students to actively challenge unacceptable peer behaviour and bring about a new normal of safety and respect.
Mr. David O’Connell, assisted by fellow members of CBC’s Science Department Marie Delaney and Vicki Hennessy, gave a most enjoyable and informative presentation to Second and Third Year students this week. The Air We Breathe, created by Mr. O’Connell, showcased a series of dramatic demonstration experiments, during which students learned about the properties of oxygen and carbon dioxide and the crucial role these gases play the biochemical processes of respiration and photosynthesis.The show also highlighted the importance of making healthy lifestyle choices for our general wellbeing and concluded with the famous 'Diet Coke and Mentos' experiment. The Cork Pops Orchestra is directed by broadcaster and musician Evelyn Grant and ‘cellist’ Gerry Kelly. All First Year students attended this year’s live performance, “A Musical Tapestry”, in City Hall, on Thursday 2nd March.This was a unique opportunity for CBC students to connect with each other in an engaging, entertaining and interactive way, through the medium of a variety of music styles, from Classical to Contemporary.
Fr. Philip Mulryne, former professional footballer with Manchester United and Northern Ireland, delivered a presentation to Fifth Year students in the College. Whilst understanding the great privilege of playing football as a profession, he explored with the students, the question of true human happiness.
College Principal, Mr David Lordon accompanied by Jacob O'Keeffe and Max O'Dowling presented a cheque, on behalf of the Charitable Activities Committee in CBC, to former pupil Conor O’Keeffe, in aid of Pieta House. In 2020, Conor raised in excess of 67,500 Euro for Pieta House, by running 32 marathons across 32 counties in 32 days. He started this feat while wearing a 32-pound vest to symbolise negative thoughts. He would shed a pound a day from the vest as he progressed. Conor spoke with Sixth and Fourth Years students, sharing his own experiences with life’s challenges and emphasised the need for all to develop resilience and how to do so, in a practical way. Conor is the founder of CrúMan, an outdoor adventure community that embodies the principles of looking after one’s mental and physical health, while exploring the outdoors.
Thomas Bugler, First Year student, received the gold medal for the 200 freestyle in the 13/14 age category at the McCullagh International Open Meet in Bangor, Northern Ireland at the weekend. He also received two further silver medals, 400 freestyle and 200 IM.
