To celebrate Wellbeing Week in CBC, we were delighted to welcome to the college, former pupil Billy Holland, Munster and Ireland with Cork dual-player Eoin Cadogan, both of whom have recently retired from elite sport. Billy and Eoin spoke to all Third Year students about challenges and resilience both on the field of play and in life in general.
Stephen McDonnell of Live Unbound shared many experiences from his life and work with Second Year students. Stephen enjoys working in the highest pressure environments, exploring the edges of what we are capable of and creating a workplace where people are happy, connected, and valued for their work and effort.
Congratulations to Evan Mulcahy, 1st Year, who won the Cork County Boxing Championships title for his category (Boy 3 46kg) over the weekend. Evan boxes with Togher club.
Congratulations to Cian O’ Mahoney, Sean Murphy and Eoin McCarthy from the Leaving Cert Class of 2022 who have been awarded Entrance Scholarships to Trinity College Dublin.The awards will be presented by Provost and President Dr Linda Doyle on 2 March.
The 15 strong CBC swim team participated in the Munster Swimming Championships held in the University of Limerick at the start of February. Charlie Cassidy, Thomas Bugler and Phelim Hanley led the medals haul with each swimmer achieving golds in their respective events. Great individual swims and personal bests.
The Junior Relay team (Phelim Hanley, Thomas Bugler, Ultan McCarthy and Matias Ó Conaill) won gold and silver in the Freestyle and Medley relay events.
The intermediate relay of Sean Bugler, Pierce Hanley, Darren O’Connell and Conal Gillard won Bronze in the Medley category, while the Senior Relay of Charlie Cassidy, Joshua O’Neill, Vincent Leahy and Eanna Garvey took the Freestyle and Medley honours.
CBC was named the top performing school in Munster and was presented with the Munster Schools Shield. The total medal haul for CBC over the weekend was 5 gold medals, 4 silver medals and 2 bronze medals, while also achieving 5 relay podium finishes.
All in CBC would like to wish our past pupils, Patrick McBarron, Killian Coghlan and Aidan Brien the very best as they line out for the Irish Universities in their game against the French Universities. The game is on this Friday, March 10, at 3pm in the Mardyke.
Congratulations to Senan Skalkos Sixth Year whose article on the value of teaching finance in secondary schools was published in yesterday’s Echo newspaper. Senan is current Chairperson of the CBC Finance Society.

Today is the day! On Tuesday, 7 February 2023, we celebrate Safer Internet Day (#SID2023) – the annual flagship campaign to raise awareness of the importance of staying safe online. With a theme of “Together for a better internet”, today calls upon all stakeholders to join together to make the internet a safer and better place for all, and especially for children and young people. Congratulations to the class prize winners from the first-year poster competition and to the overall winner Darragh Roche of 1A29. We launched our campaign promoting respect, empathy and inclusion online with this prize giving ceremony.
Following the school’s success in the last few years there was a very high number of students interested in taking part in the Lego robotics group this year so we had 2 teams take part in the First LEGO League challenge program.
The teams were made up of both 1st and 2nd year students. Raed Naseer, Phelim Hanley, Kevin McCarthy, Andy Hurley, Nikhil Sudaram, Matthew Lordon, Max Power, Jasiu Skrzeszewski, Tim Roedig, Daniel Aherne, Finn Harnedy, Charles Kaar, Raymond McGauley, Declan Walsh and Luke Murphy were member team that worked together after school on Mondays and attended the Saturday workshops in UCC.
Both teams competed to a high standard in First LEGO League (FLL) Cork regional final Saturday 28th of January in the new Student Hub building UCC.The team of Jasiu Skrzeszewski, Tim Roedig, Daniel Aherne, Finn Harnedy, Charles Kaar, Raymond McGauley, Declan Walsh and Luke Murphy came first in Core Values section of the Competition. Both teams came joint 3rd in the robot game section. Well done to all for their fantastic achievement, to mentor teacher Ms Tanya Clifford for her support and guidance, and to Head of Science Ms Martina Carroll who also accompanied the team to the regional final.
