Belonging "The natural world is the larger sacred community to which we belong" -Thomas Berry Listening to birdsong, planting seeds and watching them grow, sitting in the shade a magnificent tree; taking time to savour the natural world is good for us mentally, physically and spiritually. When we understand we are part of nature, not separate from it, we are never truly alone. As Pope Francis reminds us "everything is closely related". As we come to the end of the school year, may we see the beauty of our world with new eyes and may we remember our belonging to something greater than ourselves. May you and your loved ones enjoy your summer. May you be safe and well. CBC RE Department

Belonging "Community does not necessarily mean living face-to-face with others; rather, it means never losing the awareness that we are connected to each other"-Parker J. Palmer In these past few weeks, our lives have been turned upside down. We never could have imagined that schools and workplaces would close, that social distancing would become a feature of day to day life and that so many of the freedoms we usually enjoy, would be curtailed. Yet, in the midst of all of this, we have found ways to connect and to be in solidarity with our fellow human beings. This week, you are invited to take a moment to be aware of how we are called to care for one another, as a community. In the words of Pope Francis, "none of us is an island.......we can only build the future by standing together, including everyone.” May you and your loved ones be safe and well. CBC RE Department

Gratitude "Stormy or sunny days, glorious or lonely nights, I maintain an attitude of gratitude. If I insist on being pessimistic, there is always tomorrow. Today, I am blessed" Maya Angelou As we begin the weekend, may we recognise and appreciate the blessings in our lives. May you and your loved ones be safe and well. CBC RE Department

Gratitude "The choice for gratitude rarely comes without some real effort. But each time I make it, the next choice is a little easier, a little freer" Henri Nouwen What we practise, we become. If we focus on anxiety, worry and fear, these expand. If we focus on gratitude, this, too, expands. Research has shown that practising gratitude improves our mental and physical well-being, our relationships with others and our overall experience of happiness. This week, you are invited to take a moment each day to pause and reflect on what you are grateful for in your life. Have a good week. May you and your loved ones be safe and well. CBC RE Department

Being Present "You do not need to know precisely what is happening, or exactly where it is all going. What you need is to recognize the possibilities and challenges offered by the present moment, and to embrace them with courage, faith and hope" Thomas Merton It is in our nature as human beings, to want control over our lives. It can be difficult for us to accept that sometimes things happen that are outside of our control. We cannot change the past or the future but we can choose how we respond in the present moment. This weekend, may you face each moment with courage, faith and hope. CBC RE Department

Being Present "Be happy in the moment, that's enough. Each moment is all we need, not more" Mother Teresa In recent weeks, we have all been navigating unchartered waters. Many of us have faced challenges, anxieties and losses. Very often, we become stressed and anxious thinking about what may happen in the future, or thinking about how things should be different from how they are in reality. A way to help us during these times is by reminding ourselves to focus on the present moment. A simple practice to help us to do this is by centering on the breath. Begin by placing your feet on the ground, relaxing the shoulders and breathing out tension in the stomach. Then bring your attention to your breath. Breath in, breath out......it can help to imagine a wave coming into shore and back out again. This week, you are invited to include this practice in your day, perhaps for five minutes in the morning, or before you sleep and at times when you are feeling anxious or overwhelmed. Have a good week. May you and your loved ones be safe and well. CBC RE Department

"Serve one another in love " Gal. 5: 13 This week, on May 5th, we celebrate the feast day of our founder, Blessed Edmund Rice. The life of Edmund Rice was characterised by his service to the poor and vulnerable. He had a simple but profound trust in God and he invited his followers to share the gospel by reaching out to those in need. This week, we pray for all those who are in need in our own country and around the world. As we remember the legacy of Edmund Rice, we pray for all those who give their lives in service to those who are vulnerable and poor in our society. In this time of pandemic, we think of healthcare workers; cleaners in our hospitals; those who work to keep food and essential supplies going; those who care for the elderly and the homeless; and the many ways that people in all walks of life, try to ease the burden carried by others. Amen. CBC RE Department
