Our students were lucky enough to avoid any significant rain on the day while they investigated various plant populations, environmental conditions and adaptions of the animal population which are found within the woodland ecosystem.

It was another great weekend for the club at Skibbereen Regatta in the National Rowing Centre this weekend. There were wins in the Club scull for Andrew O’Leary and the Club four for Andrew again, Sam Hernan, Barry O’Connor, Leo Porion and cox Noah Giltinan. The Junior 18 four of Sam, Leo, Matt O’Connor, Darach Fanning and cox Odran Murphy had a great row to claim second spot in their event, and Sam and Leo went on to claim silver in the Junior 18 pair, narrowly missing out on first by .02 of a second! There were also some strong performances from our younger J16 crews competing in older age categories which bodes well for this young group into the future.

The National Schools Championships took place for the first time since 2018 this weekend in O’Briens Bridge, Co. Limerick and Pres RC returned with a bang claiming two National Titles!
First up was the Under 23 Pair of Andrew O’Leary and Sam Hernan. Having qualified from a difficult heat, the pair triumphed in a close fought final finishing just 3 seconds ahead of second place Colaiste Iognaid from Galway to secure the club’s first Schools Championship in nearly ten years!
We didn’t have to wait long for the second title, when Andrew and Sam were joined by Darach Fanning, Leo Porion and cox Noah Giltinan to race in the Under 23 Four. The crew put on a dominate display in their heat, knocking out favourites St. Joseph’s from Galway and Colaiste Iognaid A. In the final, the four stormed to victory in another impressive performance, again beating crews from across the country, including local rivals Christians who finished 20 seconds behind in 3rd place.
This was a great achievement for both crews and is well deserved for all their efforts over the last number of seasons. A special thank you must go to the coaching team for all the hours put in to help prepare the rowers for racing.
Well done also to the junior 16 and 17 crews who raced at the Championships, putting in some impressive rows against the top schools in the country.

Very eventful final day spent in Paris with visit to Montmartre in the morning to see the Sacré Cœur Basilique and Place du Tertre. Our afternoon was spent on cloud nine, visiting the 59th floor of the Montparnasse Tower, the tallest building in the city. We followed this with a walk through the Jardins de Luxembourg, where we watched a game of pétanque and then visited the beautiful Panthéon. Amongst those buried in its necropolis include Victor Hugo, Simone Veil and Pierre and Marie Curie. We then wandered the Latin Quarter to see the beautiful Notre Dame and l’Hôtel de Ville. Following dinner in a delicious French crêperie, the tour finished with a bateaux mouche boat trip along the Seine where we viewed all the famous monuments by night, including the magnificent Eiffel Tower. Vive la France !

This is the first year, post COVID, that Pres went to MTU for Scifest. During COVID the competition was held online).
Shiela Porter, the founder of Scifest, was present, interacting with the groups while they were setting up their stands and photographing and commending their work and innovation.
The standard was very high in this year’s competition, with 250 students representing schools from all over Munster.
Pres. had seven projects competing, including projects on: How music affects germination in seeds, Health benefits of Seaweed, Leptospirosis knowledge among Pres. rowers, Aerofoil shape, the effects of caffeine on performance in sport, Medicinal effects of Honey and even a project on how sweaty your socks get!
Our students had to explain their hypothesis and justify their experimental work, challenging in itself, and a skill that will serve them well in real life!
This was a great opportunity for our students to meet other young people with a similar interest in Science.
