The Careers Department welcomed Killian Williamson to PBC, with past pupils Adam and Niall. Killian is the Lecturer in Statistics and Actuarial Science at UCC. They gave a very informative talk on the study of Mathematical Science at UCC. Adam and Niall have just completed their final exams this summer and have already secured employment in Dublin in September. We wish them well in their future endeavours.

Dear Parent / Guardian,
We recommend you take the time to read the attached document on 'Digital safety for Parents' - What can you do to help keep your children safe online?
We hope you will find it helpful.
Kind regards,
Congratulations to our 4th year students who have just completed the Adventure Journey 25km component of their Gaisce Bronze award in Killarney, accompanied by president award leader (PAL) - Ms. Mary O’ Driscoll and Mr. Craig O’ Driscoll. Over the past 26 weeks, the students have been working towards achieving their Bronze award. Gaisce is a self development program for young people which aims to enhance confidence, independence and wellbeing, through participation in personal, physical and community challenges. Well done to all involved!
From Monday 28th April, Iarnród Éireann will implement Phase 2 of the National Transport Authority’s 2024 fares determination across public transport operators. As part of an extensive communications plan, Iarnród Éireann are reaching out to schools known where pupils travel to and from the school by rail in the Cork Commuter area.
While there are no changes to fares – including child fares – in the Cork Commuter area, we do wish to alert you to one important aspect of the revisions from Monday.
The maximum ePurse fare at tap-on will be higher for all ePurse users, including Adults, Students and Children, and this applies to the Cork commuter area also.
The maximum tap-on fares will increase as follows:
As a result, all LeapCard ePurse customers are reminded to touch-off at the end of their journey to ensure they are charged the correct fare.'
The Verdict is in…..No Phone Day was a resounding success!
The predominant mood throughout the school, we are very happy to say, was extremely positive. All the pupils deserve great credit for their positive attitude as they signed their phones in before the school day began and embarked on a phone free, distraction free day. One word which was repeated throughout the day by teaching staff, ancillary staff and management and which very aptly described the atmosphere was ‘calm’. There was a lovely calmness about the school all day. Teachers reported that any in- class discussions were very positive and pupils were in great form on lunch breaks.
The most outstanding difference in behaviour, you might be interested to know, and which we as a staff found of such significance to note, was the 95% decrease in trips to the toilet (Henceforth known as: I need to look at my phone for about 10 minutes and check out the gossip on Snapchat and every other social media platform I can possibly manage in the 10 minutes).
And this is why we decided on No Phone Day. We wanted to give our pupils the opportunity to be free from the distraction of their phones. We wanted to let our pupils be in the present moment and to provide an environment where they can engage better with their work and better with their peers.
And just so the students wouldn’t feel lonely in their phone-free endeavours, staff also went phone free for the day. There wasn’t a phone in sight in the Staffroom and we too felt the benefits of the practice.
It went so well, that there will be more No Phone Days to come. So watch this Phone Free Space.
Congratulations to the whole school community on a Phone Free Day well done.
