Thanks to TY student Luke Fahy for this report on the SJC vs Roscommon CBS match last week. The St. Jarlath’s College Senior football team came up against Roscommon CBS in the first round of the championship on Wednesday. Throw in was at eleven o clock in The Connacht Centre of Excellence. St. Jarlath’s started well and got on the score sheet when Tony Gill kicked a point in the first minute of the game. Within five minutes St. Jarlath’s had the ball in the back of the net after another Tony Gill effort bounced down off the crossbar. Darragh Silke finished to the net with both players looking to claiming the goal as their own! In the following minutes St. Jarlath’s missed two further goal chances which could have been crucial. Finally, after twelve minutes Roscommon CBS kicked their first point to make it 1-1 to 0-1. St. Jarlath’s were next to score with Eoin Mannion kicking a point but Roscommon CBS responded with a fine score. From the seventeenth minute up to the twenty fourth minute St. Jarlath’s kept Roscommon in their half of the pitch and kicked two scores, coming from Tony Gill and Darragh Silke. Roscommon CBS fought back at the end of the first half scoring 2-2 without reply. The first goal was the result of some sloppy defending by St. Jarlath’s - the ball bouncing through the full back line and ending up in the back of the net. The second goal was a penalty given away in the twenty-ninth minute which was almost saved by the goal keeper, Donie Halleran. The first half ended with Roscommon CBS in the lead by four points with the score 1-4 to 2-5. St. Jarlaths came out in the second half on fire, scoring two goals and five points without reply. The points came from Conor O’ Neill, Conor Newell, Tony Gill and two from Daragh Silke and the goals were scored by Alan Morris and Daragh Silke. Goalkeeper Donie Halleran was forced the make a brilliant save which was one of two missed goal chances by Roscommon CBS. St. Jarlath’s started to introduce subs; Sean Raftery for Keith Boyle, Cathal King for the injured Conor O’ Neill and Michael Collins for the injured Hugh McDonagh. Roscommon CBS managed a couple of points but it was all going the way of the boys from Tuam. Liam Kelly, Joe Staed and Conor O’Shaughnessy also came on in the final quarter when St. Jarlath added a well worked fourth goal ensuring that we ran out winners on a scoreline of 4 12 to 2 8. Next up is Rice College Westport in the Semi final. This game is due to be played after the mid-term break.
