This is one of three group mobilities from the school that will take place across Europe this year.

We are delighted to be one of the few secondary schools in the country to have received Erasmus + accreditation. Many thanks to Leargas and to KWETB for their continued support.

Our first DEAR of the school year

Well done to everyone who took part in our first Drop Everything And Read (DEAR) of this school year. Each month, we take 30 minutes from our busy timetable to simply sit back and relax with a book. In October, we have a full DEAR week to look forward to where we read for 30 minutes each day.

Our transition year ‘Rather be Reading’ class have been very busy since our return to school. We have been working on the layout out of our school library and have been making plans for the year to come. We are really looking forward to working with classes within our school and also within the greater community this year. We will be in the library at lunch time each day to help students should they wish to take out a book or if they have any questions. Our library is a quiet space where students can catch up on homework or simply read.

Happy reading everyone!

U16 and U19 Basketball News

In the first round of under 16 and under 19 boys basketball, we hosted Creagh College Gorey.

Under 16 Basketball.

Our under 16s took to the court first in what would be a hard fought victory. Ryan Doran opened the scoring with a nice post move to finish strong at the basket before Creagh College took control of the game. Creagh led six points to four at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Creagh extended their lead but Carnew hung in with excellent rebounding and defence from Kai Timmins and a well executed three pointer from the corner from Ross Whelan. At half time Creagh held the lead at 19-9.

In the second half, a very much determined Carnew took the court with Ryan Doran leading the way in terms of energy and enthusiasm. He got the team running the fast style of play we had seen from these lads last year. Ryan had a run of six points before Rory Dee took over the scoring to see Carnew take the lead. In the closing minute, Creagh College pressed Carnew but an excellent worked play saw Scott Dixon wide open at the half-way to run in a score to secure the game for Carnew on a score line of Carnew 28 Creagh 24.

Under 19 Basketball

(The under 19 report has been done by Aoife Wafer and Aine McDonald as part of the future leaders programme)

In the afternoon our u19s basketball lads took on a strong Creagh side, unfortunately it didn’t go our way but the lads persevered until the end and never gave up. First quarter started strong with Scott Dixon, Darragh Dee, Eddie Cullen, Fionn Darcy and Conor Byrne all lining out. After missing out on a few scoring chances,  Fionn Darcy and Scott Dixon both scored well needed baskets. Carnew ended the first quarter down by 04:14

In the second quarter, Cormac Murphy, and Milo Quinn joined Eddie Cullen, Fionn Darcy and Darragh Dee on the court. The lads kept fighting and with scores from Eddie Cullen.  They finished the second quarter behind by 13:31

After the half time break, new faces of Ryan Purcell,Oscar Judge and Lee Dagge brought intensity back onto the court. A great three pointer from OscarJudge and a free from Ryan Purcell left Carnew trailing by 22:37.

Despite this, Darragh Dee, Scott Dixon, Fionn Darcy, Eddie Cullen and Milo Quinn did not give up. Scores from Scott Dixon left our lads 24:43 down to finish the game.

Well done to both teams.

The next Basketball fixture takes place on Monday with our under 16 and under 19 girls taking to the courts.

Once again, thanks to Ms. Dermody and Mr. Gleeson for their continued commitment to the game.

Junior Hurling Team open their account with victory over Abbey CC Ferrybank

The junior hurling team of Colaiste Bhride began their South Leinster campaign with victory over Abbey CC, Ferrybank on Tuesday 26th September in Carnew. The opening minutes of the game saw little between the sides with scores hard to come by in windy conditions. While the home side saw plenty of ball, they were guilty of not playing the conditions at times, as shots dropped short into the keepers hands on more than one occasion. On a positive note, their work rate and tenacity shone through as they frustrated the visiting Kilkenny team throughout. At half time Colaiste Bhride led by 2 points, 2-5 to 2-3, with goals coming from Conor Donoghue and Bobby Cosgrave. Feerybank started the second half stronger, despite playing uphill and into the wind. Indeed this purple patch saw them go into a one point lead with twenty minutes to play. However from here on the Carnew players took control. More direct hurling created space and time for our inside forwards to get us back into the game. A big turning point saw a Ferrybank penalty brilliantly saved by Jim O Brien which was soon followed by a well work goal finished by Ryan Doran. Two closing points resulted in a final scoreline of 3-11 to 2-7 in favour of Colaiste Bhride. We now face PDLS Bagnelstown in our next game, where victory would ensure a home quarter final.

Aidan Bolger, who completed his Leaving Certificate in June last, paid a surprise visit to the school this week to present an expertly crafted portrait to the school Principal, Ms Linda Dunne.

The portrait is a gesture of appreciation for the guidance and support that was shown to Aidan while attending the school. Along with an excellent set of Leaving Certificate results, Aidan was twice awarded 'Highly Commended' at the National Texaco Children's Art Competition.

Wishing Aidan the very best in his future endeavours.
