The junior hurling team of Colaiste Bhride began their South Leinster campaign with victory over Abbey CC, Ferrybank on Tuesday 26th September in Carnew. The opening minutes of the game saw little between the sides with scores hard to come by in windy conditions. While the home side saw plenty of ball, they were guilty of not playing the conditions at times, as shots dropped short into the keepers hands on more than one occasion. On a positive note, their work rate and tenacity shone through as they frustrated the visiting Kilkenny team throughout. At half time Colaiste Bhride led by 2 points, 2-5 to 2-3, with goals coming from Conor Donoghue and Bobby Cosgrave. Feerybank started the second half stronger, despite playing uphill and into the wind. Indeed this purple patch saw them go into a one point lead with twenty minutes to play. However from here on the Carnew players took control. More direct hurling created space and time for our inside forwards to get us back into the game. A big turning point saw a Ferrybank penalty brilliantly saved by Jim O Brien which was soon followed by a well work goal finished by Ryan Doran. Two closing points resulted in a final scoreline of 3-11 to 2-7 in favour of Colaiste Bhride. We now face PDLS Bagnelstown in our next game, where victory would ensure a home quarter final.

Our under 16 and under 19 girls travelled to neighbours FCJ Bunclody in the first group game of the South-East C basketball.
First to the court were the Under 19 girls who started the game on the front foot with an opening score from Grace Colfer. Olivia Shannon also got in on the scoring and Carnew were up 12-2 at the end of the 1st. In the 2nd quarter our girls kept the pressure on FCJ with Aine Darcy, Chealse Dixon, Chole Roberts and Rose Alice Byrne all scoring to have the lead at 20 to 4. In the second half, FCJ fought their way back into the game but the Carnew lead was too much of a gap to close and our under 19 girls ran out winners on a score line of 38-20.
In the second game, not to be out done by the u19s, the u16s started very quick with Charlotte Doyle scoring the first six points of the game and Grace Colfer scoring from distance for three points. This saw Carnew lead 9-0 at the break. Our girls maintained the offensive and defensive tactics until the end, running out winners on a score line 37-11.
Thanks to FCJ Bunclody for hosting the games and best wishes for the rest of the season.
Well done to both teams who now face Coláiste Bhríde Enniscorthy at home on the 2nd of October.

We are very proud of our two Transition Year Gaeltacht Scholars, James Lambert and Eadaoin Kinsella O'Neill, who have settled into school and community life at Coláiste Ghobnait on Inis Oírr, the smallest of the Aran Islands.
The two students initially reported that life was very different from home on the Aran Islands. However, they have thrown themselves into all that school and Island life has to offer including playing in music sessions/ceilidhe, football, camogie, fishing, swimming, home cooking and more.
The Gaeltacht scholarship provides recipients with an invaluble immersive experience 'As Gaeilge'. On their return to fifth year in Carnew, these students will have developed all aspects of their use of the language and this will benefit them in their approach to the subject at Leaving Certiificate. We wish them both well and look forward to further reports during the year.
Congratulations to Johnny Connors, 6th year, who travelled to Latvia to compete at European level in category A boxing.
Johnny's opponent from Estonia on Saturday, 16th September provided a great challenge in the semi-final. Nevertheless, Johnny's skill and tenaciousness booked him a place in the final the following day.
Johnny kept his Latvian opponent exactly where he wanted him in the final. This ensured him pole position on the podium at the prize giving.
A worthy and well-deserved win at European level boxing for this talented young man.
On Thursday last, our two TY Horticulture classes travelled to the National Botanical Gardens in Glasnevin, Dublin where they were given a guided tour and a workshop. They were educated on the history of the gardens, as well as on various collections of plant species from all over the world, and native cultivars.
The workshop included a visit to a replica Viking Age house built entirely from plant materials, a tour of the impressive glasshouses, and students were allowed to taste some species of fruit, vegetables and spices including peppercorns, native crab apples and quinoa.
A great day was had by all. Thank you to Mr. Gleeson and Ms. Dayna Lancaster for organising and to all the teachers who accompanied the TY group.
