Performance of "Hamlet" Meaningful and Enjoyable

On Monday, 9th October, our 6th years travelled to The Mill Theatre in Dundrum to watch Shakespeare’s greatest play “Hamlet” in preparation for their Leaving Certificate.

This clever, modernised production did not fail in the director, Katie O’Halloran”s vision that “Shakespeare’s words do not belong to the past. Understanding that his writing must feel fresh and alive to the eyes and ears of today’s audiences is crucial in approaching his  plays."

Without a doubt our students gained valuable insight into the characters on stage, laughing at the long-winded ramblings and advice offered by Polonius and appalled by the tragic downfall of Ophelia and of course our tragic hero, Hamlet.

The students were complimented for their excellent behaviour throughout the production by the staff and management of The Mill Theatre. Many thanks also to the teachers who accompanied students on the day, Ms Donohue, Ms Melia, Ms Redmond, Mr Callinan and Mr Lambert.

Junior ladies football team dominates the field with a spectacular victory

On a mild Friday morning, on the 6th of October in Carnew the Junior girls football team faced Presentation college Wexford in their first game of the year. Before the game commenced both teams respectively observed a minute’s silence for the late James ‘Bear’ Doran, who was a pillar for the community and a respected mentor for many young students in Colaiste Bhride.

The anticipation was bubbling and the first whistle was blown, moments later the mighty full forward Aine Darcy opened the scoring with a point from a free after persistent work from Karen O’Brien and Leanne Twamley. It was crystal clear from the first blow of the whistle that the Carnew defence was going to be hard to break down, crucial saves from goalie Emma Kirwan and powerful defending from full back Laoise Doran and our swift center back Megan Hayes set the scene for what was to come. Consequently, the Carnew side only conceded two points in the first half. Spectacular points from play came from Leanne Twamley, Laura Gregan, Caoimhe Kinsella Nolan and Alannah Murphy followed by an Aine Darcy free which ensured our dominance and at half time we held a scoreline of  4:08-0:02.

Fresh legs from halftime subs of Clodagh Doyle, Keelin Molloy and goalie Aoife Neville assisted our girls in maintaining a high standard of football in the second half. A solo run from Alannah resulted in a classy goal from Aine Darcy, followed by a dazzling point from Clodagh. A dropped free from Aine Darcy was finished honourably by Leanne. Continuous herculean strength in our back line from Caoimhe Kinsella and Kate Tomkins left the visitors with 1:5 at the end of the game. An impressive long-distance point from Kate and 1:1 from Ali Byrne complimented the Carnew triumph. Our girls secured an outstanding victory of  7:13-1:05.

The girls now look forward to their next challenge in the Leinster competition against Bray next Wednesday .

Huge thanks to the four TY future leaders (Donal Rawson, Darren Fogarty, Tessa Jane Hogan, Ciara Kenny) and Aine McDonald (sports reporter on the match) for their assistance in today’s match.
