Wins at Munster Branch Regatta

It was a successful day for the junior 18 squad at the inaugural Munster Branch Regatta in Inniscarra at the National Rowing Centre on Saturday. There were wins in the J18 Eight and Four, the Club Four, and a second place finish in the J18 Pair.

Ben Mullane, Adam Hartley, Rex O’Sullivan, Andrew O’Leary, Eoghan Aherne, Sam Hernan, Darragh Buckley, Leo Porion and cox, Noah Giltinan made up the eight. Jack Carroll joined Ben, Andrew, Rex and Adam to cox them to victory in the Junior Four, and Leo stepped in for Adam to win the Club Four. A fantastic effort all round from the whole squad.

With only 5 weeks remaining until the National Championships, this was a great boost for the squad as they head into the final phase of the season. Next up is Cork Regatta on the 24th and 25th of June, again at the National Rowing Centre. This will be the final chance for the rowers to prepare themselves for the end of season championships.

Transition Year Chemistry students visited the newly constructed and commissioned Lee Road Water Treatment Plant today which accounts for 70% of the water supply in the city of Cork.

Lee Road Water Treatment Plant has been in operation since 1879. This new design, build & operate project has been the first major upgrade to the plant in over 60 years.

Students received an in-dept site tour on the processes involved from start to finish of water treatment.

Some areas of the upgraded plant which our students learnt about were:

- The reconfigured raw water intake.

- Coagulation, flocculation & clarification systems.

- Chemical & UV disinfection.

- Wash water & sludge handling facilities.

- Gravity filters & water pumping station.

- Supervisory Control & Data Aquisition systems.

PBC GOLD MEDAL ESSAY 2023

Words to make you cry, words to make you reflect and words to make you hungry - a pithy but somehow apt description of the PBC Gold, Silver and Bronze Medal winning essays this year.

Ross Daly, Ben Wrixon and Mark O Connell were the respective winners and PBC Librarian and judge, Sophie McKenzie had, as ever, a really difficult task whittling down the 40 plus entries to a final shortlist of the aforementioned medal winners and the 3 highly commended students, Reuben Skuse, Dara McMahon and Kevin Corkery. (All medal winning essays can be read on attached PDF)

Working from a quote from chef, Heston Blumenthal, Ross Daly constructed a beautiful love letter to his deceased grandmother to take the gold medal; among the judge's comments was:

However, it was the sincerity and openness of the essay that disarmed me; I felt that the writer poured his heart and soul into this, not just his writing talent.

On Ben Wrixon's persuasive essay on the dangers of nostalgia, the judge noted:

I respected the writer's confidence in applying his criticisms to the most immediately relevant and topical questions raised by the essay subject, diving straight into the political dimension of nostalgic thinking instead of idling in a more low-stakes discussion of personal stagnation. Compelling and passionately argued.

And on Bronze Medal winner, Mark O Connell's essay, again inspired by Blumenthal's quote, judge Sophie McKenzie had this to say:

This piece was simple but nicely textured and layered once you dig into it – much like the chicken sandwich it celebrates. Mark O’Connell captures the peaceful, observational atmosphere of eating a nice meal in a diner. Just as the pleasures of eating such a meal are fundamentally quite simple, his writing style and descriptions are also simple but enjoyable and easy to read.

Well done to the winners, to all those who entered; much thanks to Ms McKenzie for her forensic and balanced judgement and of course to all the English teachers who nurture such wonderful creativity.

PBC cricket match
Created : 18 May 2023, 4:24 PM
Archived : 18 Jul 2023, 12:00 AM

The PBC cricket team had a comfortable victory over CBC in the Mardyke cricket grounds on Thursday.

PBC set CBC 178 to chase after a good batting performance with Connor Stevenson and Cian MacKenzie opening the batting and putting a good partnership together. The runs followed smoothly with each batsman adding to the score from Callum Stevenson, Sam MacKenzie, Daniel Barry all contributing. The score really accelerated when the PBC captain and Irish U19 player, Eshan O’Sullivan, came to the crease and added some big boundaries. CBC took some fantastic catches to slow the score rate. The other batsmen of John Kennedy, Umar and Usman Asif adding runs after a quick fire cameo from Fionn Roussel.

In the second innings CBC were put to the sword with some great fielding and bowling. All of the team got a bowl with wickets from Daniel Barry and John Kennedy and Sam Mackenzie doing very well. The wicket keeper Connor Stevenson was involved in a number of runouts and stumpings. CBC were all out for 110.

A good day for cricket and a well deserved win for PBC over CBC.
