Hard luck to our U-16.5 hurlers who lost the county final today to Coachford at UCC sports grounds in the Mardyke. It was a very close game up until the closing minutes when the opposition managed to pull away. Our boys can be very proud of their performance and we look forward to seeing them represent the school at senior hurling level in the years to come.

More than 300 million tons of plastic waste are produced annually, which causes serious environmental issues because of plastic's life cycle and the difficulty of eliminating it. Consequently, most plastic waste ends up in either a landfill or the ocean. A significant number of plastics break down into micro-plastics, which are ingested by fish and other marine life causing havoc to marine ecosystems. In Journal of Renewable and Sustainable Energy, by AIP Publishing, researchers from California State Polytechnic University report using catalytic pyrolysis to turn plastic wastes into a valuable fuel source. Pyrolysis is the thermochemical decomposition of carbon-based matter in the absence of oxygen. The catalytic process used in this experiment on plastic waste could also be used to process other wastes, such as manure, municipal solid waste, and used engine oil, to make usable energy products. The researchers found the pyrolysis product was very similar to a standard diesel fuel product, and they will try to optimise diesel fuel production from various mixed plastic wastes. Of course, this has huge ramifications for sustainability and the stability of our ecosystems with the removal of these plastic pollutants!
PRES MOVEMBER MERCY CAMPAIGN

The annual Movember campaign in Pres is now up and running. Movember is an international campaign to raise awareness of and funds for male cancers, specifically testicular and prostate cancer, and mental health. Now in its tenth year, our annual campaign in Pres encourages a conversation amongst the school community about these issues and all funds raised are donated directly to the Mercy Foundation Cancer Appeal. One in six men will be affected by cancer in their lifetimes and the school’s donations continue to make a valuable contribution to cancer research locally. As in previous years, we are encouraging all students and staff with the ability to cultivate a mo, and all with the means to contribute, to get on board with this year's campaign and to give generously. We are hopeful that after last year's hiatus as a result of pandemic restrictions, Dr. Derek Power will again return to speak to our senior students about his work and the steps that our young men can take to keep themselves safe. Please visit gofund.me/f19f6b70 to donate to this very worthy local cause. Sincerest thanks in advance for your generosity.

It’s been an incredibly busy few weeks for our Coaching Module students! The first half of this school term has seen our coaches engage in micro-coaching, interview Munster Rugby senior coach Stephen Larkham, and discuss all things nutrition with former Munster Rugby player and current nutrition consultant of Cork GAA, Jonny Holland. Our coaches also had the opportunity to visit the National Rowing centre for a tour and to chat with the High Performance Operations Manager, Fran Keane. Fran gave a fantastic talk about the Tokyo Olympics and the day-to-day life of Olympic athletes. Our coaches are now progressing on to fully planning and coordinating hour long coaching sessions with each of our 1st year class groups in the run up to Christmas.

PRES UNICEF GET A VACCINE GIVE A VACCINE

The PRES UNICEF GET A VACCINE GIVE A VACCINE CAMPAIGN has been a resounding success, with €4610 raised and 922 people vaccinated thus far. The response from students, parents, staff and the wider Pres community has been overwhelmingly positive. As part of the awareness raising aspect, all of the junior school students received a CSPE class on the topic of vaccine inequity and produced some admirable works of art on the theme, some of which has been on display in the school throughout the week. The reaction of the Pres community and the funds raised display incredible empathy and solidarity with those less fortunate than ourselves, and we believe we can justifiably be proud of our contribution in the midst of a global pandemic. The campaign and fundraiser ( gofund.me/5d54a5ef )will conclude tomorrow and we would sincerely like to thank all those who got behind the campaign and gave so generously. It is very much appreciated.
