Last summer, BIS (Business Information Systems) UCC invited Senior Cycle students in Cork to a photography competition with the theme of “Technology Making the World a Better Place”. Students were encouraged to capture a photograph with their smartphone of how they had observed technology benefitting their community. Ronan Murphy (current 5th Year) entered the competition. Ronan's submission was a photograph of a home projector beaming a film onto an exterior screen, with three fellow fifth year students watching. The photograph was captured outside, and was praised by BIS for demonstrating “how technology created community and connection in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic”. Several weeks later, Ronan was invited to attend a small prize giving event in the O’Rahilly Building on campus. Here, he was presented with a Chromebook and shown an anthology of BIS students’ artwork. Well done, Ronan!!!

The Junior Cup returned through the gates of PBC, to end their 8 year drought. The first try came early, fittingly from the captain Rory Moloney, who led by example with an excellent game. He received an offload inside the Christian’s 22 following a break and beat the full back to jog underneath the posts, swiftly converted by Harry Murphy. Following a loose ball from a broken down Pres attack, Christians kicked down the field and eventually capitalised after touching down in corner after passing it through the hands. The conversion was missed and Pres held a slender lead going into halftime at 7-5. PBC built on their lead from the restart and after some strong carries, the ball was fed to winger Eoin Hurley in the left corner who touched it down in fantastic fashion. Harry Murphy split the posts from an incredibly narrow angle to make it 14-5. The crows were in a frenzy as they could almost taste victory. Christians piled on the pressure attempting to make a comeback but were stopped in their tracks by some great Pres defence. However, it seemed they had found a chink in the Pres armour but were denied at the last second through a Peter Stringer-esque tap tackle from Harry Murphy. The Pres defence stayed strong after a relentless barrage of Christian’s attacks on their own line. Finally, the Christians number 8 picked off the scrum in what would be a consolation score. Alas, no time remained and as the the final whistle blew the manic Pres support erupted. After losing the Senior Cup final, you could see how much it meant to the school to get their hands on important silverware. It was a well-earned win for the players, who never put a foot wrong all game and also for the coaches, who put in 12 months of hard work and reaped the benefits. It was a great performance by the team and hopefully a sign of things to come. The Junior Cup returned through the gates of PBC, to end their 8 year drought. In very testing and windy conditions, PBC finished 2nd place overall on 265, just 2 shots behind the eventual winners CBC on 263. Ten schools competed. Although disappointed not to win, it was a great experience for us all and we enjoyed it hugely. . PBC V CRESCENT: Match report by Seb O’Donoghue and Hugh McCarthy

The Pres Senior Cup campaign ended in disappointing fashion as they fell 26-5 to Crescent. PBC were on the back foot from the first whistle but threatened to turn the tables when Harry Coughlan gathered a loose ball from an errant Crescent ruck in his own half. He broke through for what looked like a nailed on score, only to be dragged down by the last Crescent defender, just mere inches from the line and unfortunately the chance was lost. Crescent struck the first blow after 15 minutes from close range after they worked an overlap on the right wing and the conversion was added from the corner. The gap was widened 5 minutes later as Crescent’s full back scored a marvellous solo try, and with another successful conversion the score was 14-0, which it stayed until half time. Straight after the restart, Crescent capitalised off a mishap in the Pres lineout and dotted down untouched in the corner, and with the ensuing conversion missed, the score stood at 19-0. However, Pres heads did not drop and the team showed great character and resilience. Their valiant efforts were rewarded with a well-deserved try through hooker Danny Sheahan to claw the score back to 19-5. They were constantly spurred on by the roaring support, the 16th man who never lost his voice. The crowd hoped that maybe they could witness another miraculous comeback similar to the semi-final against Christians. However, PBC, unfortunately, couldn’t build on their first try. Crescent collected another score, this time under the posts after charging down a Pres kick to make the final result 26-5. Despite not getting their hands on silverware, the campaign can still be considered a success, as the players and coaches enjoyed a great run, which they should all be proud of. Most notably the thrilling aforementioned 21-19 comeback against Christians in the semis, a game that will live in the minds of Pres fans for a long time.

Pres had an excellent performance in this year’s Regional Applied Maths Team competition recently. The joint efforts of our 5th and 6th Year applied maths students proved very successful on the night. Congratulations to our team consisting of William Hetherington, Charlie Neville and Sean O Coilean who won on the night and Fionn Coleman, Mark Fitzgibbon and Isaac Lee who came second. Congratulations to 6th Years students Ronan Barry, Diarmuid O’Connor, Darren Sheehan and Isaac Wheelock who participated in the National Final of Team Maths at the weekend. In the regional round of the competition in January, they finished joint first and as a result they were one of 12 teams selected to take part in the national final where they finished a commendable fourth place. We wish to acknowledge the students involved for their exemplary work ethic and dedication in preparing for the competitions.

Congratulations to our fantastic cross country runners who outdid themselves in the National finals in Belfast this weekend. Our Minor team braved an extremely muddy course and finished in 5th place. An outstanding performance from each of our athletes Tom Kelly, Paul Kelly, Bobby Waters and Andrew Hinds. Conor Twomey competed in the Intermediate category, excelling in a grueling 5km and finished in 48th place. Conor is eligible to compete in this age category again next year, so to achieve such a high position this year is particularly impressive. Huge well done to all involved, including their team members that aided their qualification from school trials, South Munsters and to the Munster Championship.

In challenging conditions, the crew of Rex O'Sullivan, Sam Hernan, Andrew O'Leary, Eoghan Ahern, Tadhg O'Flynn, Ben Mullane, Leo Porion, Darragh Buckley and cox Jack Carroll finished second behind a strong Castleconnell crew from Limerick. This brings an end to the 'Head of the River' season for the club and huge credit must go to all the rowers and coaches on some strong performances throughout the Winter portion of the season. Next up is the Munster Indoor Rowing Blitz in UL Arena on March 31st.
