Rockets in Wilton!!!

What makes rockets fly straight? What makes rockets fly far? Why use water to make the rocket fly? These are some of the questions TY students in Mr. Garvey’s Physics class came together to answer over the last number of weeks culminating in a ‘Rocket Launching’ field day competition on Tuesday 5th May. The colourful and varied designs were launched using a device which builds air pressure in the bottle using a foot pump and then the stored-up energy is released when a holding latch is released – propelling the rocket into the air and launching the careers of tomorrows engineers. Well done to all involved!!!!

PBC had yet another day of success in athletics as 7 athletes made their way to Templemore, to compete in the Munster Schools’ Track & Field Championships on Saturday 21st May.
Matthew Wilkins was our first and last athlete to compete as he kicked off the day with Paddy Walsh in the Intermediate Long Jump. Both athletes jumped well, with Matthew winning our first medal!
Later on, Matthew added to his tally by taking home the silver medal from the Intermediate Triple Jump. It was a very close competition with both 1st and 2nd place jumping the exact same distance! The winner was decided by comparing the athletes’ second best jump.
Matthew Riordan was next up in the Junior Shot Put. Matthew threw well, but unfortunately missed out on the medals this time around.
Our next athlete was Oscar Naughton in the Junior Pole Vault. He came away with the silver medal despite very blustery conditions. He quickly followed up with a comfortable first place finish in the Junior Discus.
Meanwhile, on the track John Cashman was lining up in the Intermediate 100m Hurdles. With a photo finish needed to determine the medal winners, he was unlucky to land 4th place. Definitely more to come, as John is eligible to compete in this age group again next year!
Finally, Conor Twomey and Frank Balfry raced in the U16 mile. Both athletes ran competitively with Conor finishing in 4th place with a new personal best and Frank coming in at 6th.
Congratulations to all athletes on their spectacular performances! Many thanks to all parents and guardians for their support and assistance with travel. We look forward to the All-Ireland Championships which take place in Tullamore on the 4th of June.
Wishing best of luck to all our Qualifiers!!!

A crew of 30 athletes ventured out to MTU athletics track to represent PBC at the South Munster Athletics Championships last Thursday 12th May. In a thrilling day of competition and rivalry, PBC experienced great successes!
On the track, Conor Twomey and Frack Balfry excelled in the U16 mile, with both athletes progressing to Munster Championships and Conor taking home the silver medal.
John Cashman opened his athletic season with a comfortable 3rd place finish in the 100m Hurdles, and secured qualification to Munster.
Daniel Murphy and Matthew Lynch qualified for their respective 100m finals by defeating dozens of competitors, but unfortunately missed out on the medals this time around.
Three relay teams spent the long day waiting for their time to shine, and they certainly didn’t disappoint! The Intermediate teams were unfortunate to miss out on the medals, despite fantastic runs. The Junior team of Bobby O’Callaghan, Michael Browne, Sé Clarke and Daniel Murphy qualified as the third fastest team on the day and so progress to the Munster Championships.
Our Field eventers proved to be wildly successful! Oscar Naughton competed in the Minor Discus competition bringing home the gold medal, to match his gold from the Pole Vault earlier in the
week.
Shot Putters also cleaned up with Robert Barry winning silver in the Intermediate and Matthew Riordan winning Bronze at Junior level.
Matthew Wilkins was another big winner taking home two medals! Gold in the Intermediate triple jump and silver in the long jump. Paddy Walsh was also in the mix, winning the bronze in the long
jump.
Overall, a fantastic day of racing, jumping and throwing! Congratulations to all involved, and stay tuned to hear about our results in the upcoming Munster Championships!
Many thanks to Mr O’Driscoll for supervising on the day!
