We were absolutely thrilled today to welcome Mr Sean Coughlan of the Irish Cattle Breeding Federation for this year's Science Lecture. Mr Coughlan delivered a very informative talk to Agricultural Science, Computer Science and Biology Students on the complex role of the ICBF in delivering quality information to farmers. The integration of Agricultural Scientists, Computer Scientists and Geneticists is crucial to the successful operation of a world leading breeding program and such collaborations are key to a sustainable future for Irish agriculture.

Our Transition Year students completed a Workshop in Forensic Science which consisted of students using analytical and critical thinking skills.

Students conducted experimental investigations with ballistics, gunshot residue (GSR), photographic analysis, fingerprints, autopsy and how the main theories link with history.

A fantastic opportunity for our TY students who thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Perhaps this will inspire some of our students to pursue a career in Forensic Science!

Green-Schools Travel in association with An Taisce, provides schools the opportunity to apply for a grant that will cover the supply and installation of cycle parking at their school. Our Green Schools Committee applied for a covered bike shed which holds 20 bicycles in the hope of encouraging more staff and students to cycle to school, and we were delighted to see it installed this week! This is a great facility for the school and highlights the theme of the flag we are working towards at the moment, which is Travel. Pictured are members of the Green Schools Committee Emmet Brady, Alex Chircu, Umer Kiani, Ben Wrixon and Ross Daly, with Ms. Crowley.

T.Y. Students Visit Courthouse

I was filled with excitement that Wednesday morning myself and the rest of the TY Law Module class were brought up by Mr Mullarkey to the District Court. Upon entering the building I recall noticing the concrete floor, made of a number of very large grey bricks, like something out of an old castle or fort. The walls, windows and door however, were very modern in their design. I was enamoured by this mixture of old and new present in the courthouse, the traditional and the innovative. Upon arriving in the courtroom we were given the opportunity to have our photos taken sitting in the judge’s chair. The view from the chair was breath-taking, and there was a feeling of importance setting in it, like you had become a part of this ancient tradition and institution which maintains order and freedom in our society. The Judge then came in and spoke to us about the role and daily duties of the district court. It was fascinating to hear this first – hand account of court life and it gave us all a deep insight into the complexities of the legal system. We were also told about the different parts of the physical courtroom and their purpose, for example we were shown the glass box they put the defendants in, as many of them are prone to violence and thus it is safer to keep a barrier between them and the rest of the court. After the judge’s talk we sat down in the back of the courtroom and waited for the hearings to begin. We saw solicitors, guards, the court reporter and a barrister, all taking their places. When the Judge entered dressed in his flowing black robes all stood up and sat down only after he was in his chair. Court was now in session! What first struck me was the speed at which they went through each hearing. For most they would simply state the name of the defendant, their charge and then decide a date to reconvene. Then they would simply move onto the next case. On average each case was no longer than a minute. The Judge had told us earlier that the day before he went through 250 cases, and it seemed there would be no fewer today! The defendants were all in a different part of the building, and appeared on a large screen on the wall behind the Judge. They were all accused of quite low – level crimes, shoplifting, drug possession, assault and similar charges. The court session finished at around ten past twelve, and we made our way back to school. I felt incredibly grateful to have received the opportunity to experience for myself the way in which our fascinating legal system works! Ronan Mc Carthy

The creative writing talent was out in force among the boys in Pres for the Halloween Writing competition. Open to students across all years, PBC Librarian and judge of the competition Ms. McKenzie had an incredibly tough task to whittle the entries down; following much rumination and weighing of the merits of each script, the winners for best stories were: Ronan Murphy 6A, Ronan McCarthy 4E, Liam Fitzgerald 3A, Daniel Barry 2C and the winner of best poem was Michael Scott 3E. Well done to all on a wonderful achievement, keep harnessing that wonderful literary talent and to all students, keep an eye out for further writing competitions as the year progresses. Special thanks to Ms McKenzie and all the teachers for promoting and supporting the competition. Pictured in photo receiving their prizes of books and vouchers, left to right are Liam Fitzgerald, Michael Scott, Ms Sophie McKenzie, Daniel Barry, Ronan McCarthy and Ronan Murphy.
Music Society Open Mic - October Session

The fervour of anticipation was palpable as the stalls of the Dan Donovan theatre filled on what was a grey and languid October Friday afternoon on the Mardyke. To the south of the building the windswept trees subtly whispered a kind of knowing as, on the northern side, the grey river bulged and coiled against the back of the red bricked exterior. The buzz of electricity crackled as Amps awaited their chrome inputs; snare drums hissed amid the ambient flurry and rush of youthful adrenaline. Eighty-eight black and white keys sat at the ready, silently awaiting their youthful masters to bring an alchemy of touch that would fill the bowels of this great establishment. Impassioned youth. Raw talent. Teamwork and collaboration. Poetic words scored with decadent, yet subtle harmonies. Personal monologues that captivated the imagination. An effervescence of song and spoken word filled the auditorium and in the true Pres spirit of fraternal respect, the crowd punctuated the show with the warmth of grateful applause. And suddenly it was over…Bleary eyed and happy, the crowd filled the labyrinthine pockets of the great school to resume their work… till next time! David O’Riordan youtu.be/wp-YAMuhe6A

Congratulations to Matthew Wilkins (4th Year), Oscar Naughton (3rd Year) and Jack Sheehan (1st Year), who represented PBC in the recent Munster Schools' Combined Events Championships. All athletes performed admirably, with special mention for both Matthew and Oscar, who finished in the top 10 of their respective age groups. In Combined Events competitions all athletes compete in all 5 events (Hurdles, Shot Putt, Long Jump, 200m and 800m) and earn points based on their performance in each individual event. It's extremely challenging as athletes must be technically proficient in a wide variety of disciplines, so well done all!

The 51st annual Cork Sculling Ladder took place this weekend on the Marina and there were strong performances across all junior categories from Pres RC scullers. Most notably there was a win for Leo Porion who had an outstanding row which saw him clinch first place in the Men's Junior 15 grade. Leo's time also placed him in the top 20 out of nearly 200 competitors, finishing above a number of older junior and senior athletes. Andrew O'Leary also had a strong row and finished 10th overall and second in the Men's Junior 17 grade, only narrowly missing out on top spot by 3 seconds. Well done to Leo and Andy, and to all the rowers who competed on Saturday and put in such positive performances.
