It was another successful weekend for Pres RC with the club competing at the Provincial Indoor Rowing Championships in the UL Arena, Limerick. Rowers raced individually in the dreaded ‘2k’ erg test, and also in the team relay events.

Andrew O’Leary powered to victory in the Junior 18 category with a personal best time of 6:15.1. Andrew’s time was also the fastest overall of the day, beating intermediate and senior athletes. Congrats Andrew!

Andrew enjoyed further success in the 5th Year relay where he was joined by Rex O’Sullivan, Adam Hartley and Eoghan Aherne. The team claimed first place storming to victory and leading the field from start to finish in an impressive time. The 2nd Year relay team had a strong row to finish second in their category, and there were personal bests all round for many of the rowers who raced on the day.

The club now heads into a busy Christmas training period before the National Indoor Championships take place in January where our rowers will get to race alongside Olympic Gold medalists and World Champions! Well done again to everyone who raced on Saturday!

It has been a busy number of weeks for our TY Coaching Module students. Currently the group is coming to the end of the module and are doing a fantastic job in coaching our 1st year students on Wednesday mornings.

Over the course of the module our coaches have been exposed to professionals from a variety of fields, such as nutrition and mental skills. Ex-Munster rugby player Jonny Holland spoke to our coaches about the vital role that nutrition plays in athletic performance, in addition the importance of sleep and the role of supplementation. Tom Painter from APEX Mental Skills gave a two hour workshop on developing a positive culture within a sporting organisation and how to mentally empower athletes.

Our coaches have developed a wide range of skills over the course of the module. These include: inter-personal communication, time keeping, positive reinforcement and inclusive session planning.

Well done to all involved and thank you to all staff members that gave up their class time to allow their 1st year students to be coached!

The annual Movember campaign in Pres is again up and running.

Movember is an international campaign to raise awareness and funds for research into men's cancers, specifically testicular and prostate cancers, as well as mental health.

As in previous years, class groups compete to raise as much money as possible, with the victors winning a prize. Staff and students cultivate moustaches for the month, and we welcome Dr. Derek Power, Consultant Oncologist in the Mercy Hospital to the school. Dr. Power will speak to our senior students about his work and the preventative measures that they can take to keep themselves safe.

We strongly urge all in the Pres community to support the campaign again this year. Your generosity is very much appreciated.

It was a busy weekend for the rowing club with the Junior 18s competing in Erne Head of the River, Enniskillen, and the Junior 14, 15 and 16 squads racing Skibbereen Head of the River on the Marina in Cork.

The long trip to Enniskillen was a fruitful one for the crew of Rex O’Sullivan, Andrew O’Leary, Ben Mullane, Darragh Buckley and cox Noah Giltinan who won the Junior 17 Fours and came 3rd in the Junior 18 Fours race, finishing behind a host of national champions and internationals in the crews from St.Joseph’s Galway and St.Michael’s Limerick who finished 1st and 2nd respectively.

This was the first Head of the River race of the season and a good test for our Junior 18 squad against the top crews in the country. The second crew of Eoghan Aherne, Adam Hartley, Leo Porion, Darach Fanning and cox Jack Carroll also had a good row to come 2nd in the Junior 17 Four race and 6th in the Junior 18 category.

On home waters on the Marina, Cork, a large entry from the Junior 14, 15, and 16 squads raced in Skibbereen Head of the River, a 3k time trial from the Port of Cork to Blackrock. The Junior 15 8 turned in a very quick time in their category, and this squad further impressed with a 3rd place finish in the Junior 15 Quad. There was a top ten finish for Sam Hernan in the Junior 16 scull and the Junior 14 squad rowed well and continue to gain valuable racing experience as we begin the winter racing season.

Next up for the rowers is the Provincial Indoor Rowing Championships on Saturday November 26th in the UL Arena, Limerick.
