It was a successful outing at the National Rowing Centre for Pres RC at Cork Regatta this past weekend. This was the final race of the season before the national championships in three weeks time, and an opportunity for our rowers to test themselves against the best in the country.

On Saturday, Andrew O’Leary continued his strong season with a win in the intermediate scull after impressive rows in the heat and final. Well done Andrew! Andrew goes on to trial for the Under 23 Irish squad this coming week and we wish him the very best of luck.

The junior pair of Sam Hernan and Leo Porion picked up second place, finishing narrowly behind St.Joseph’s of Galway. Sam and Leo were later joined by Barry O’Connor, Darach Fanning and cox Odran Lynch for the junior four event where they again lost out to St.Josephs, again by only a few seconds.

On Sunday, the crew of Sam Hernan, Andrew O’Leary, Matthew O’Connor, Leo Porion and cox Noah Giltinan finished second in the club four, a senior category event. The four lost out to UCD by 5 seconds but finished ahead of other university and senior crews from across the country. A fantastic achievement for this young crew!

Our junior 16 eight, junior 15 and junior 14 quads all had good rows in their respective events and gained more valuable racing experience. Well done to everyone who raced over the course of the two day regatta and best of luck to everyone in their final preparations as we look towards ‘The Champs’ in a few weeks time!

PBC GOLD MEDAL AWARDS 2024

Congratulations to Jack Carroll of 6th Year who is this year's winner of the PBC Gold Medal Essay. There were three titles to choose from and Jack showcased his love and passion for nature in his choice of the descriptive essay on an autumn evening. Sam Browne, PBC Librarian and the judge with the casting vote commented:

“Jack’s essay captures perfectly the transient nature of autumn, and of nature itself. Placing himself at a crossroads between summer and winter, he deftly describes a changing world around him. Clear, crisp writing detailing a beautiful, liminal space.”

The Silver Medal was a close call between Ben Mullane and Dylan Swihart who both chose the personal essay on 'Friendships, flashbacks and untangling school memories.' Ben took it by a whisker with one of the judges commenting:

“Ben takes on the theme of nostalgia from a fresh perspective. His essay on friendships is a charming meditation on losing what is familiar and meeting new challenges in life.”

Bronze was richly deserved by Dylan Swihart who also reminisced on his 6 years in Pres, charting them year by year and giving a quirky, sometimes humorous, sometimes wistful insight into what it means to go to this school.

Congratulations to one and all and to all their English teachers who have been on the journey with them.

Our students were lucky enough to avoid any significant rain on the day while they investigated various plant populations, environmental conditions and adaptions of the animal population which are found within the woodland ecosystem.

It was another great weekend for the club at Skibbereen Regatta in the National Rowing Centre this weekend. There were wins in the Club scull for Andrew O’Leary and the Club four for Andrew again, Sam Hernan, Barry O’Connor, Leo Porion and cox Noah Giltinan. The Junior 18 four of Sam, Leo, Matt O’Connor, Darach Fanning and cox Odran Murphy had a great row to claim second spot in their event, and Sam and Leo went on to claim silver in the Junior 18 pair, narrowly missing out on first by .02 of a second! There were also some strong performances from our younger J16 crews competing in older age categories which bodes well for this young group into the future.
Pres RC win two National Schools Titles!!

The National Schools Championships took place for the first time since 2018 this weekend in O’Briens Bridge, Co. Limerick and Pres RC returned with a bang claiming two National Titles!

First up was the Under 23 Pair of Andrew O’Leary and Sam Hernan. Having qualified from a difficult heat, the pair triumphed in a close fought final finishing just 3 seconds ahead of second place Colaiste Iognaid from Galway to secure the club’s first Schools Championship in nearly ten years!

We didn’t have to wait long for the second title, when Andrew and Sam were joined by Darach Fanning, Leo Porion and cox Noah Giltinan to race in the Under 23 Four. The crew put on a dominate display in their heat, knocking out favourites St. Joseph’s from Galway and Colaiste Iognaid A. In the final, the four stormed to victory in another impressive performance, again beating crews from across the country, including local rivals Christians who finished 20 seconds behind in 3rd place.

This was a great achievement for both crews and is well deserved for all their efforts over the last number of seasons. A special thank you must go to the coaching team for all the hours put in to help prepare the rowers for racing.

Well done also to the junior 16 and 17 crews who raced at the Championships, putting in some impressive rows against the top schools in the country.
