Maths week is taking place this week in our school. The theme of Maths Week is “Maths at Work”. We have a variety of exciting activities using a wide range of Social Media and in class activities to stimulate the recognition of Maths working all around us in our everyday lives. Please ensure that you are signed up to the school’s social media sites.
Skills at problem solving are very useful in life and in the workplace. The good news is that you can learn these skills. Problem solving should be at the heart of maths education. The National Research Council and PISA has cited problem solving as an important skill for the workplace.
Students need to prepare for careers that require the ability to work effectively in groups and to apply their problem-solving skills in these social situations (Brannick and Prince, 1997; Griffin et al., 2011; National Research Council, 2011; Rosen and Rimor, 2012).
PISA explains, “Today’s workplaces demand people who can solve problems in concert with others” and “employers are willing to pay higher wages for people with well-honed problem-solving and social skills”. (Collaborative Problem Solving, PISA Results, Volume V, 2015, p.32).
Can we develop Problem Solving Skills?
Problem solving skills make us feel more comfortable when facing a new challenge. Developing our problem-solving skills means improving our strategic thinking; it helps us to find appropriate strategies and enables us to think of different ways to approach a problem. Such skills can be learned and improved by constantly challenging ourselves. The immediate feeling of success when having solved a problem is extremely rewarding. We become more confident and are encouraged to practise and tackle increasingly complex challenges.
It is important to encourage a positive attitude towards Maths/problem solving in the students, to nurture a ‘can do’ approach in an informal setting and to inspire them to develop strategies to solve maths problems and puzzles.
Working on a solution to a problem in a team is usually more effective: you support each other, you share ideas, you build on each other’s ideas and you are more likely to find a fast and simple / appropriate strategy to solve the problem you are facing. This makes the project more fun and finding a solution together is a very motivating (but also challenging) experience that adds to everyone’s personal development.
Over the next four days, we intend to upload some brain teasing puzzles that the whole family can collectively solve. Here is today’s puzzle:
Farmer, Fox, Goose and Cabbage
A farmer must transport a fox, a goose, and some grain across a river. She has a boat, which can only carry herself and one other thing. If the farmer is not present, the fox will eat the goose. If the goose and the grain are left together alone, the goose will eat the grain.
How can the farmer transport everything across the river?
When you have done that, answer these questions:
1. How many trips will it take?
2. What happens if we change the number of items to be transported?
Each problem may be solved by a unique strategy – but often several approaches can help to find a solution and many strategies can be applied to more than just one single problem. By practising and becoming more skilled in discovering these, we strengthen our strategic thinking. We also develop what is called lateral thinking: it becomes easier for us to see the problem in a different light, thus being able to solve it in a more creative way and using strategies that we may not have associated with a particular problem in the first place. We learn how to transfer problem solving strategies and by doing so become confident in new situations.

Today Ms. Barrett’s 2nd Years investigated the factors that increase the rate of reaction in Alka-Seltzer tablets. They carried out 5 different tests and measured the length of time the reaction took for each one. They found that increasing the surface area and temperature increased the rate of reaction the most. #noheadacheshere #stem #stemschool #stemeducation #fromeachhisbest

1st Yr Footballers win Laois Schools competition

Our 1st Yr Footballers won the Laois Schools Competition this afternoon, defeating Colaiste Iosagáin, Portarlington on a scoreline of 4-12 to 2-11.
The CBS got off to a great start as a pass from Mark O’Connor allowed Aaron McCormack to pull first time on the ground to the net. A lengthy run by Denis Browne set up Davy Delaney for a nice point before Joe Larkin added a second after good work from Sean Tuohy. Following great tackling from Aaron Fitzpatrick, the ball broke to Sean Tuohy to calmly slot the ball over. Tuohy again fielded the resulting kick out and set up Davy Delaney for his second point. Joe Larkin then added the first of his two goals after great interlinking play from Dan Downey who ran at the Port backs and offloaded to Larkin to finish. Great anticipation from Ross Dunne allowed him to pick up a ball on the wing and he found Fitzpatrick who laid off to Larkin for his second goal. The teams entered the 1st water break with CBS leading 3-4 to 0-1.
The second quarter was a real battle for possession with scores at a premium. Port’s outstanding centre-forward Ultan Dunne scoring 1-1 while our own Davy Delaney pointed our only score of the quarter. The half finished 3-5 to 1-2.
The second half saw the CBS backs weather a great storm as they time and again foiled many Port attacks, with James Doyle, Andrew Whelan and Paul Byrne contesting every ball while Sean Powders began many a counter-attack, with Eoin Deegan linking many plays. Conor Dunne’s kickouts found his CBS players every time. Joe Larkin stuck over two points after great work from Tuohy and Downey while Aaron McCormack was on the end of two attacks to score a brace. After a great run by Denis Browne, he was dragged down on the 20m line. McCormack took the resulting free who found Ross Dunne unmarked and he slotted the ball over the bar. In the final minutes Dan Downey scored a superb goal. After starting the move at midfield, he continued his run through the middle and buried the ball in the back of the net to secure the win. Well done to all the players involved and to their coaches Mr. Lowry and Mr. White

Mock Exams for 3rd and 6th Years

Mock Exams will be held during the weeks of February 7th to 18th. This year, Leaving Cert Mock Fees are €133 and Junior Cert Mock Fees are €113.
Instalments or full payment can be made on the School App.
If your son's exams haven't been paid for, they will not be sent away for correction. The first set of papers to be posted will be on Friday February 11th, so this is an important date to try to have it all paid up. There will be another posting, the following Friday but unless full payment is made, the exam papers will not be sent away.
We do not say this lightly and do not mean to sound demanding. However, the full cost of Mock Exams is €35,500, believe it or not. The school cannot support any non payment, as you can understand. We appreciate your support, and if you wish to discuss a payment arrangement with me, please ring the office.
1st/2nd/TY/5th Reports - 1st Year Parent Teacher Meeting

Your sons' Christmas Reports have been published on VSware this morning.
The First Year Online Parent Teacher Meeting has been arranged for Thursday afternoon from 4.15-6.45 pm. The Booking Form went live yesterday. Due to time constraints it will not be possible to facilitate a meeting with all of your son's teachers for this Thursday afternoon. If you have any issues that need discussing with any of your son's teachers, and are unable to book a meeting, please email the school (stmarys@portlaoisecbs.com) with your son's name, class, subject and the teacher 's name whom you wish to hear from. We will pass on those messages to the teachers who will reply to you by phone or email.
We have not had any face to face, online or in person, meetings for parents so far this year. We felt that it would be better to facilitate as many as possible of the First Year parents through the booking system and online Teams meetings this time. But there are only 29 time slots per teacher, and obviously that cannot facilitate everyone. We will do our best for all interested parents to receive the feedback they want and deserve over the coming week or two.
Thank you very much for your patience and understanding.
