TY Parent update and evaluation

Hi all,
We are at the end of a very long term for all in St. Marys CBS Portlaoise and we are delighted with all we have managed to achieve considering the outlook in September was so uncertain. There are 50 students in TY with 50 different preferences and likes/dislikes - so it is always a challenge to provide a programme with enough variety balanced with enough of the big ticket fun activities. As I'm sure you are aware though, we have a very special year group and they really have been fantastic in getting involved in everything this term.
We are so proud of all our students and especially appreciate the time and effort they put into the TY CBS Christmas shoe box appeal. The appeal was a major success story and tied in nicely to the TY theme of community and the whole school approach to the Christmas food appeal for families in Laois. Next term we will look to raise money for another charity and we welcome any suggestions from parents who know of a worthy cause!
Over the next few weeks you will receive your sons term 1 TY report both from their individual teachers and from myself. We will update you on their engagement to date and how they are progressing throughout the year. For now though, let’s have a look at what they been busy with so far.
TY students have engaged in the following activities since September:
The TY Show
Burning House Productions – Film Making
Bogathon
Mock trials, Debating & Law
Look into Law
First Aid Training
Ty Graffiti Workshop
Theatre Trip to Cork & Dunamaise Theatre
Fundamentals
SOAR
SciFest
Barista Training
Cinema Trip
Retreats
Wax Museum
Shoe Box Appeal
Horticulture Trip
TY Gameshows
Enterprise Day
Work Experience
Careers Testing
Annual Christmas Trip
The TY programme also offers a number of OPT IN events where students can nominate to get involved. These are open to all students and always have the capacity for more! The opt in events this term were excellent, some of them are listed below;
Microsoft week long App Development Internship
Virtual Online Work Experience with DNG Real Estate
Law Virtual Work Experience with Clifford Chance
STEM@UNIVERSI-TY at Trinity Walton Club
Houses of the Oireachtas Work Experience
SID Ambassador Programme
Microsoft Dream Space Coding Event
Extra-Curricular Teams & Coaching
Finally, below is a short evaluation form for you to complete. We are always striving for ways to improve our TY programme at St. Mary’s CBS, and we hope your feedback and support can help us continue to develop the transition year programme.
