Mock Exams for 3rd and 6th Years
Created : 18 Jan 2022, 3:29 PM
Archived : 18 Mar 2022, 12:00 AM
Mock Exams will be held during the weeks of February 7th to 18th. This year, Leaving Cert Mock Fees are €133 and Junior Cert Mock Fees are €113.
Instalments or full payment can be made on the School App.
If your son's exams haven't been paid for, they will not be sent away for correction. The first set of papers to be posted will be on Friday February 11th, so this is an important date to try to have it all paid up. There will be another posting, the following Friday but unless full payment is made, the exam papers will not be sent away.
We do not say this lightly and do not mean to sound demanding. However, the full cost of Mock Exams is €35,500, believe it or not. The school cannot support any non payment, as you can understand. We appreciate your support, and if you wish to discuss a payment arrangement with me, please ring the office.
1st/2nd/TY/5th Reports - 1st Year Parent Teacher Meeting

Your sons' Christmas Reports have been published on VSware this morning.
The First Year Online Parent Teacher Meeting has been arranged for Thursday afternoon from 4.15-6.45 pm. The Booking Form went live yesterday. Due to time constraints it will not be possible to facilitate a meeting with all of your son's teachers for this Thursday afternoon. If you have any issues that need discussing with any of your son's teachers, and are unable to book a meeting, please email the school (stmarys@portlaoisecbs.com) with your son's name, class, subject and the teacher 's name whom you wish to hear from. We will pass on those messages to the teachers who will reply to you by phone or email.
We have not had any face to face, online or in person, meetings for parents so far this year. We felt that it would be better to facilitate as many as possible of the First Year parents through the booking system and online Teams meetings this time. But there are only 29 time slots per teacher, and obviously that cannot facilitate everyone. We will do our best for all interested parents to receive the feedback they want and deserve over the coming week or two.
Thank you very much for your patience and understanding.

Important Message to all Parents

Good morning and best wishes for a happy new year to you and your families,
With a new year comes new resolutions and higher expectations. This applies to personal life as well as school life. This notification is to make all parents / guardians fully aware of our expectation on all our students to raise their personal performance in school. This applies to their uniform, homework, the correct use of journals, their attention in class and other aspects of school life which help our students reach their full potential and learn the value of self-discipline, personal responsibility, self- directed learning, and respect.
We know that repeatedly reminding students about journals, uniforms, homework does not always work. We also need support from home – your support. Since September we have given warnings and chances yet the same behaviours persist among a certain few. This gives the impression to those who are complying that they can also ignore the rules. It also makes little of the positive efforts which many parents are making to be compliant with us.
Covid has provided an excuse for just about everything in the last 2 years. Making excuses for yourself on a regular basis is not a good way to realise your own potential. We are compassionate, empathetic and fair minded. However, allowing standards across all aspects of school to be undermined by such a mindset is not in anyone’s interests. This undermines the excellent efforts of those students and their parents who uphold the values of our school – ‘from each his best’.
In a nutshell, beginning Monday, the behaviours listed below in class and around the school will incur an automatic Friday Detention. This was announced to all students present in school yesterday and we are making parents aware today, in order that you can discuss this with your son, to make sure he is aware of the zero tolerance for some behaviours and the consequences which are a Friday afternoon detention – in advance of Monday morning.
1. The wearing of PE gear on a day when the student does not have PE will incur a Friday detention. Those 5th years doing the LC PE course have been told by their LCPE teacher which day per week they are to wear the PE gear and only on that day are they to do so. They also have the ‘normal’ PE on other days, for which they should wear the PE gear as usual.
2. There will be spot checks on students’ journals, uniforms and general classroom behaviour in the coming weeks by the Principal, Deputy Principals and Year Heads.
3. Students should not wear hoodies or hats whilst in the building.
4. No student should be sitting in any class without engaging in the classwork being done, for any reason.
5. The wearing of earrings and other facial piercings in school is, as always, forbidden. They must be removed before entry to school. Wearing them during school will result in them being confiscated and a Friday detention.
6. The full school uniform is standard for each day in school – unless it is a PE day. This includes the tie, black shoes, jumper, grey trousers and shirt and school jacket. For PE they must wear the school’s PE half zip and a plain black track suit bottoms. We have had a school jacket since 2008 and until Covid, all students had to remove other jackets before they entered the front door each morning. They were never allowed to wear a non-uniform jacket until they were gone out the door at 4pm. So this is not new.
What is new is that we have a new style jacket, available in Shaws since the summer and last June we asked parents to purchase one for their sons. We appreciate those who have done so. During the 2020-21 school year, we did allow a plain black jacket to be worn, for the very strange year that it was. We are working to get the uniform back to where it was. Hence, this focus for the coming weeks on it.
To clarify
–If your son has a school jacket, that is the only jacket he is allowed to wear between 9am and 4pm on the school grounds. Thank you for purchasing it.
-If he does not have a school jacket he must remove his other jacket before he enters the school and he cannot wear it in class, along the corridor or during lunch time outside. The opportunity was given 7 months ago to have it for the cold/wet weather. Several may have presumed we would then let it slide, but this is not the case at all. This is non-negotiable.
-From Monday, if he wears the non-uniform jacket in school he will be given a Friday afternoon detention. There will be no more warnings. As many windows are open, we advise extra layers of t-shirts under the school shirt/jumper for everyone. We are all dressing in extra layers this year.
6. All students must have their School Journal with them each day, in class. Failure to do so will incur a Friday detention. While the use of Microsoft Teams is a great support to students who must miss class due to illness, school activities, etc., parents still wish to see the HW in their son’s journal to know what should be done at home. Writing it down also focuses the student’s mind on what he must do after school. We have asked all teachers to ensure the HW is written into the journals at the end of each class, in addition to putting it up on Teams. We will be carrying out spot checks from Monday.
Your sons are gentlemen, sometimes with issues and sometimes needing a bit of guidance and direction. But they are all good lads. We will continue to work together to instil good habits, practices, values and provide good example to our young people. We appreciate your support always. Have a good year ahead. MM
