Welcome back to school tomorrow after our Christmas Break

Tomorrow marks the return to school in yet another strange year. The health and safety of our students and staff is paramount and all guidelines have been followed in order to the continue the excellent record we have had of controlling Covid in our school. It is very important that all parents speak with their sons about the importance of following the one way system no matter how annoying it may seem to have to walk around the long way, wearing their masks properly over their noses and replacing them when they have completed their eating/drinking. Also remind your sons that the seating arrangements put into place in all general areas such as the GPA, the other 2 lunch areas and along the corridors are to be maintained. Chairs should remain the metre apart, not be pulled closer in order to be a closer group. The perspex screens should be in front of the students not beside their ears as they crane their necks around them. Annoying as all this is, they are in place for the reason of limiting the spread of Covid-19. We appreciate the great work done by students up to the end of 2021 in this regard and hope that this will be our last school year to have to remind students and limit them in their socialising, which is a very important part of school life. As expected, there will be teacher absences. As there are absences in all professions and workplaces this month. Work will be put up on Teams where possible and we again ask parents to encourage your sons, whether they are at home or at school, to check in and keep up with their classes. Everyone's texts and workbooks are at home and there is no excuse for students at home, who are close contacts or asymptomatic, not to check into Teams during each class to do the assignments posted there. Once again, I want to wish our entire school community well - both in the current difficult month and in the year ahead. Please God nobody will be become seriously unwell and that all families will be able to maintain their employment and income throughout these difficult times. As always, if there is a situation which you feel you need to discuss with me, please ring the school office or email me directly. (mmurphy@portlaoisecbs.com) Take care. MM

Their aim was to create a movie trailer using a combination of StopMotion and live animation techniques. They worked in groups to film, direct, edit and produce the CBS trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home! Special thanks to Kate and well done lads!! Here are some behind the scenes images, see the St. Mary’s CBS Instagram and Facebook page for the full trailer. #fromeachhisbest

2nd Year Debating Championship

Last Thursday 16th Dec classes Bobby and Eric battled it out in the final of the Second Year Debating Championship. Well done to the debaters from all Second Year classes who took part in the Championship over the past few weeks. Winning team member from Eric, Jack Donoghue, writes 'I'm very happy with how our debate team performed during the championship, as my team Jack Heffernan, Daniel Maunsell, our captain Cormac Deegan and I researched each topic carefully and then performed our speeches to the audience with attention to detail. The runners-up, in form Bobby (Eamonn Brown, Sam Mendez, David Finnegan and Mithila Rathmayake) really challenged us and made us work harder than we had done in the past as their speeches were phenomenal and well researched. In ending it was a great experience and anybody interested should at least try it once.' Well done to all involved!
