Our Senior Rugby Team made their way to Tougher in Portlaoise on Thursday for the development blitz. Seven Teams in all took part with each team playing each other once.
Our first game was a local darby against Mountrath CS. A hard fought contest ended in a 5 all draw. Our attentions then turned to St Kevin's Dunlavin, again a war of attrition here with St Kevin's making the early inroads with a well worked try. We had to regroup and some stylish play from Ben Dempsey, PJ Larkin and Paddy Reddin saw Jake Darcy getting in for a well worked try. This was followed by more hard work from the pack who made great strides getting back to the St Kevin's try line with Jack Mc Grath powering over from close range.
With 6 games to play there is a very short turn around before we got into our third game against Comfy College. We found ourselves on the back foot straight away with some big carries from Comfy but thankfully our lads withstood the wave of attacks with a great defensive display before some more creative backs play saw PJ Larkin getting in for a well worked try.
The lads hardly had their breaths caught before they lined out to play Colaiste Iosagain, the 4th game saw another raft of changes to the team to give lads a breather. Another darby with most players knowing each other well from the club rugby circuit, saw big hits and strong carries from both sides. It was a beautiful bit of skill from Ben Dempsey with a sweet cross field kick that saw Jake Darcy touching down for a beautiful try, another win for St Mary's CBS now unbeaten on the day. The next game saw us facing Adamstown CC with more changes to the team. Some new players got a chance to show off their prowess in this game with Bola Atanda, Giovanni Sales and Sean Savage all making strides. Our strong form continued and we secured our 5th win on the day to remain unbeaten.
For our 6th and final game Lucan CS were the opposition. Again the team saw more changes with fresh players introduced. Some fabulous performances in this game again with Bobo Lawal and Eoin O’Brien Mc Cormack showing their experience keeping the pack rolling forward. The lineouts worked well all day and a nice rolling maul from a winning line out had us perched on the Lucan try line. It was a beautiful team move with silk passing and clever interplay from Eoin O’Brien McCormack that unlocked the Lucan defence to see Michael Daly cross the whitewash for a well deserved try. These great results have left us unbeaten on the day and into cup rugby for the next stage of the competition. Great performances from numerous players on the day. The young guns Paddy Reddin, PJ Larkin, Jake Darcy and Evan Bergin showing their skills off on numerous occasions but stand out player on the day was Matthew Coonan. #fromeachhisbest
