A Chara, We hope your return to school is going well. Fingers crossed this academic year sees us return to some form of normality. We are now more than ever aware that parents want their children exposed and educated about ICT, Computing, Coding and Cyber Safety. Post-Primary students in most school are now undertaking some form of ICT & Computer Science Lessons, these mainly should be the JC Short Coding Course or LC Computer Science. Our extra curriculum club’s syllabus is based around these two areas which helps students progress within these subjects. Kids Coder Club an Irish based entity, has aligned with post-primary schools nationwide to provide “Live Online Computing, ICT & Coding Classes” for their students. These extra curriculum classes are opening to your students and will aid them to learn 21st-century life skills whilst upskilling in the area of ICT. We would greatly appreciate it if you would share the following information with your parents via any of your communication channels to make them aware that these classes are now available for their children. We have a “Free Trial Lesson Session” on the 8th of September. Here students and parents can explore the world of computing and coding whilst getting further information about our community. Parents can book this FREE TRIAL at the following link. kidscoderclub.ie/booking-page To check out all about Kids Coder Club, please watch out introduction videos at Kids Coder Club – Teaching children computing and coding. Welcome back to our 5th years today

We welcome back our 5th years this morning. They will have an Assembly, pay for their School Journals (€10) and receive their timetables during the 9am class. Then, they will resume classes until 1.15. If you have not yet paid online for his Journal, please do so today or else put the money in an envelope with his name on it and send in with him. There are no buses at this time. It is important that all students make a good start this week. We sincerely hope this is a full year of 'in school learning', and that the uptake of the vaccination for the 12-18 year age group will be a game changer with regards to resuming school activities which are so sorely missed by all. The UNIFORM is the starting point - in that, attention to small details get a person into the mindset of upping their game. Carelessness and lack of attention to detail will not focus the minds on being back in school in general. The shoes, as always, are to be black leather and not black runners. Please have them remove their piercings, as they will be asked to do should they arrive to school with same. No excuses that they can't be removed will be entertained. The school jacket, which is currently out of stock in SHAWS, will not be needed this week, or hopefully for a few weeks, while the weather remains warm. This year, unlike last year, no other jacket or hoodie will be allowed in school at all. The PE Uniform of the new half zip and a pair of plain black tracksuit bottoms is the only PE gear to be worn on the day of PE. Any colour T-shirt can be worn underneath it however. No student should wear their PE uniform unless they are timetabled for PE that day. We do not have use of the changing rooms yet so they will come to school and remain in the PE uniform until end of school day. This will be a big year for these lads. But we are here to support them, as always, with study skills classes, career guidance throughout the year, , giving them constructive feedback on their assignments and exams, advising them with their subject levels, and being here for yourselves as parents. If this is your first to go through the State Exams, no doubt you will have questions. Particularly as no two years have been the same for the last three years! But, it will all work out. We'll get you there. Looking forward to seeing your sons in the morning. Thank you for your support in the past and looking forward to the coming school year. MM

Our thoughts and best wishes are with Gary O’Reilly this coming week at the Tokyo Paralympics. Gary has brought the town of Portlaoise alive with flags and posters speeding him on his way in the H5 Handcyclist race. Gary has previously represented Ireland at the UCI Paracycling Road World Championships and the World Paracycling Track World Championships. His strength and determination, both physical and mental, has taken him to where he is today after an accident which left him paralysed from the waist down at the age of 21, 7 years ago. Time trials for the Men’s Time Trials take place this Tuesday August 31st, and the Road Race events on following days. Whether Gary brings home an Olympic medal or not, he has done himself, his family and his town very proud!
