24th November 2023
Dear Parents, Guardians,
We hope this letter finds you all well.
We are contacting you regarding the violent incidents, rioting and looting which took place yesterday in our city.
Firstly, we would like to say that our thoughts are with all the victims and with the school community of Gaelscoil Choláiste Mhuire as they deal with this significant trauma. Our thoughts are also with the Gardaí and Emergency services whose lives were unnecessarily put at risk as a result of such horrific violence.
In the aftermath of such events, for young people and indeed, us adults, it is sometimes hard to know what to say, do or feel. For our students, particularly for those who may have been particularly affected by the events which took place, today and the next number of days might be very challenging.
In such circumstances, the best thing for your children is for you as parents/guardians and us, as your children’s educators to:
· model calmness and self-regulation
· simply acknowledge what happened
· share a little of our own shock/concern if that makes sense for you
· reassure your child that this is isolated - it’s not normal
· emphasise that things will be ok
Please contact your child’s tutor on Monday if your child needs any additional support in the aftermath of yesterday’s incidents.
Finally, we would like to express our abhorrence to the hate that was on show yesterday evening. We would like to acknowledge how upsetting this must have been for many of our families and staff here at HCETSS. At times like this, our pillar value of kindness is all the more relevant and important.
We are fortunate and thankful to have a rich intercultural community here at HCETSS and we want all of our families to know that you are most welcome here in our school and in Ireland.
In our school, every child is welcome and every child belongs.
Wishing you a safe and calm weekend.
Kind regards,
Pádraig Conaty Mick Heffernan
Principal Deputy Principal
