Dear Parent/Guardian, We are writing to you as we reach the end of the second year of our school’s development. It has truly been a year like no other. To welcome in 75 First Year students in September 2021, build upon the excellent practices around learning and teaching established in Year 1, all the while supporting student wellbeing and engagement has been a huge collective effort. This year, we also opened our first Autism Class, The Grove, a significant milestone for us in becoming a fully inclusive school community. Our First Year students settled in very well and really engaged with all of the learning opportunities which HCETSS has to offer. They are a talented group of young people with boundless amounts of positivity and energy. Second Year grew in size and as the original pioneers of the school, we are extremely fortunate to have such a kind, considerate and inclusive group of students. We will be relying on all of our students to welcome in next year our three new First Year classes. By this September, our school community will have grown to just under 190 students. We had a great team of Professional Masters in Education (PME) students this year. Dan, Michael Sam and Stephen are now fully qualified teachers and we wish them all well in the next stage of their careers. Next year will see our staff increase by four teachers across a range of different subject areas. The recruitment process is well underway, and we have made some fantastic appointments. Some work is also taking place on our campus over the summer holidays. Our campus footprint will increase as two additional prefabs are installed on the main site and our boundary fence moved to include these additional learning spaces. One of these will be a mainstream classroom, the other will be staffroom and staff workspace for our teachers and SNAs. Term three in particular, has seen extensive consultation with students around digital learning, assessment, dress code school as well as engagement with the two student associate members of our Board of Management. We have also consulted with you around digital learning in our school via our PSA. Your feedback has been invaluable and will greatly help to inform our Digital Plan for 2022/23. It has been great to welcome parents back into school following the social isolation brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic. Our Community Day in March was one of the highlights of the year. We hope to hold many more in person events next year. A heartfelt thanks to all staff for their dedication and commitment to our students and our vision for Harold’s Cross ETSS. Our amazing staff make the high standards of learning, behaviour and wellbeing experienced by students look easy to achieve. The reality is that it takes a huge investment of time and energy to research, plan, prepare, reflect, adapt and innovate. We are hugely grateful and inspired by their hard work every day. Finally, a huge thank you to you, our parents and guardians for the support and trust which you have placed in us, your children’s educators and for your positive encouragement and reinforcement of the HCETSS pillar values of kindness, creativity and effort. Everything that we do here is in partnership with each of you and your support is greatly appreciated. We should be very proud of all that we have achieved together thus far. Our Sway newsletter can be found here: sway.office.com/PKDS55BldRMYoz5w?ref=Link&loc=play Wishing you all a restful, relaxing and hopefully sunny! summer break. Dear Parent/Guardian, We hope that this letter finds you all well and that you and your families had a relaxing Easter break. We are writing to you at the start of our final term for 2021-2022 around a range of important school areas. Summer Assessments Please find attached assessment timetable for Second Year assessments. Please discuss this timetable with your child. It will also be accessible to them via their Schoolwise account. If you have any queries regarding specific subjects, please contact your child’s subject teacher. For general queries, please contact your child’s tutor. Community Day 2022 We would like to express our immense gratitude to all of our parents and guardians who helped with our Community Day. The event was a huge success with over 600 people attending on the day itself. It was truly a wonderful opportunity for us to meet current and future students, parents and guardians as well as many members of our local community. The event enabled us to showcase the high-quality learning and teaching which takes places in our school as well as the positive relationships which underpins all that we do. The stars of the show were of course our wonderful students who spoke with such maturity and confidence about their experiences to date of our school. Thanks to all of you who dropped off and collected children involved with the running of the event. Involve Autism Public Meeting On Thursday 7th April, our school were invited to a public meeting involved by Involve Autism D6/D6W & Surrounds. Our Autism Programme Lead, Paula Kennedy Flynn and Pádraig were given an opportunity to share our school’s experience of opening the first second level autism class in our local area and what inclusion looks like in HCETSS. In September 2022, our Autism class will have six students enrolled which means that it will be deemed full by the National Council for Special Education (NSCE). We are delighted that the recent news regarding permanent accommodation means that upon handover, we will be in a position to accommodate 24 students in four separate Autism classes. In the meantime, we are very supportive of Involve Autism D6/D6W & Surrounds’ advocacy and support work in encouraging other secondary schools in our area to open Autism classes to help meet the huge demand and end the practice of autistic children from our local area having to travel out of Dublin 6/6W in order to access a suitable second level school place. Front Entrance & Parking Reminder that for health and safety reasons, it is not possible to drop off students at our main entrance. We liaise regularly with Dublin City Council Transport Division and An Garda Síochána regarding safe access to our school campus. The two school communities of HCTESS and Harold’s Cross Educate Together National School are required to ensure that the bus lane travelling towards Harold’s Cross village is always unoccupied. Similarly, it is not permitted to park up on any footpaths adjacent to the entrance to our school campus. If you require vehicular access to our school campus for a specific mobility related issue, e.g. a student requiring the use of crutches, etc., please contact office@hcetss.ie to discuss in confidence. Dress Code Our student council are currently collating suggestions for an updated dress code policy. Our current dress code will be reviewed using a mixed methods approach to data collection. The SPHE tutor class period will provide an opportunity for students to discuss and review our current dress code during small focus groups, walking debates, and finally by completing a questionnaire. The student council’s research sub-committee have recently conducted their ‘students’ voices’ data collection during SPHE tutor classes. All of these tools are student led. We will also be engaging with all parents and guardians around your expectations of an inclusive, practical and reasonable dress code which respects students’ ability to dress in a manner that reflects their unique personalities while respecting our school ethos and promoting the safety of our students. Prior to this comprehensive consultation period concluding and an updated policy being ratified by our Board of Management, please see below expectations of all students for Term 3 of this academic year: • Our expectations are that clothing will be clean and comfortable and allow freedom of movement for active learning. • Clothing should fit properly and cover the majority of the body with the exception of the head, face, neck, arms and legs from the mid-thigh down e.g. no string vests or belly tops permitted • Clothing should cover underwear and should not be see-through • This does not prohibit the covering of the head or partial covering of the face for religious, ethnic, cultural or health reasons. • It is expected that all students will be identifiable and that any make-up or coverings such as hats, caps, hoods and sunglasses will not interfere with communication during teaching and learning activities. • Coverings such as hats, caps, hoods and sunglasses are not to be worn indoors. • Long nails or jewellery should not inhibit participation in classroom tasks or activities. • Special care should be taken in specialist rooms where students are expected to wear clothing that limits exposed skin and limits potential catching e.g. ripped or torn clothing • Flip flops are not permitted. • Please ensure that your child avoids the display of slogans, graphics or offensive language on clothing and/or accessories. • During PE and other sporting activities o Please ensure that sportswear and trainers/runners are worn o No jewellery other than a sport watch to be worn. o Football shorts or similar shorts are permitted. • HCETSS understands that some students may need exemptions for sensory reasons. Permission for such exemptions should be sought from our Additional Student Needs (ASN) Coordinator, Niall (niallbehan@hcetss.ie). Please discuss these expectations with your child over the next number of days to ensure that as a school community, we have shared expectations around the dress code from Tuesday 3rd May onwards. We look forward to engaging further with you as part of our student-led review of the updated policy. Partnership with UCD Innovation Academy On Wednesday 27th April, we launched a formal partnership with UCD Innovation Academy. This exciting partnership will have a hugely beneficial impact on the learner experience in our school and we are very grateful to UCD and our patron, Educate Together in supporting us to make this partnership a reality. Please see link to agreed press release: www.innovationacademy.ie/ucd-news-articles-events/category/ucd-innovation-academy-press-releases/a-new-partnership-between-ucd-and-harolds-cross-educate-together/ Chewing Gum Reminder that no members of our school community (students or staff) are permitted to use chewing gum on our school campus. This applies from the white gates at our main entrance. Calendar 2021-2022 Please see attached school diary. We have had to make one change regarding our last staff meeting of this academic year. For this meeting, we are engaging with EDelia Coaching to complete our 2021-2022 review and draw up plans for 2022-2023 that will speak to our strategic plan. This meeting will now take place on Thursday 26th May rather than Tuesday 24th May. Please note earlier finish on Thursday 26th May. All lessons will conclude at 2.00pm and there will be no extra-curricular activities after school on this date. 2022-2023 Our start date for Second Year students for 2022-2023 will be Monday 30th August. Our start date for Third Year students for 2022-2023 will be Tuesday 31st August. We will send you a detailed school dairy for 2022-2023 over the coming weeks. Accommodation As previously communicated, we were recently informed that An Bord Pleanála have granted planning permission for our permanent accommodation. This is a huge milestone in the development of our school. Please rest assured that we will continue to proactively engage with the Department of Education around the tender and procurement process, appointment of a contractor and proposed timeline for delivery of the building. We will keep you informed at every point of this process. In terms of our temporary accommodation, we will receive one additional classroom and a second prefab for a staffroom/staff work-space for September 2022. These units will be delivered in July and August 2022 and will be situated on the main stadium site, therefore expanding our current campus footprint northwards and ensuring that all current student recreational spaces are maintained. As always, we thank you for your continued support and commitment to our school. Best wishes, Pádraig Conaty Principal Mick Heffernan Deputy Principal
